1 Minute To Soft Hands – Olive Oil Sugar Scrub

Happy Friday friends!  I am so excited to introduce our new segment Beauty & Style.  We had such an overwhelming response from our 3 Twists Hair Style post, we decided beauty and style is something all of us want to see more of.  Oh the fun we’ll have!  The focus will be practical tips, tutorials, and advice that can be applied by a busy mom.  You know, stuff that easily fits into your life that you can pull off without feeling awkward.  Today we are starting with a simple scrub that will transform your hands (or whole body) in less than a minute.  You won’t believe the results you get from something so easy.  Catch me after the jump!

Simple Sugar and Olive Oil Scrub

I don’t know about you, but when things are simple, I tend to actually do them.  Such is the case with this scrub.  Between winter, cleaners, and well life…my hands tend to dry up and show an age that I’d rather them not.  Scrubbing off the top layer of dry skin is the quickest way to soften them and take off years.  But if I have to dig out five ingredients, slice lemons, measure oils – while all lovely, it just doesn’t make it into my daily routine.  So I came up with a simple way to make my hands look great in less than a minute with two ingredients.  Here’s the scoop:

pouring sugar

A few times a week I pour about 1-2 tablespoons of sugar into one hand.

Pouring Olive Oil

Then I pour about the same amount of Olive Oil into my hand.  I think coconut oil would be fabulous for this too – actually I will have to try that next time.  You can adjust these amounts to your preference.

Hand Scrub

Then over my kitchen sink I rub the mixture in between my palms to combine and then spread it all over my hands.

Sugar scrub

Working in little circular motions all over my hands I scrub off all that dead skin.  I like to take it up my arm a bit too. Last I scrub a little on my cuticles, they really get dry so this helps to soften them.

Then just rinse well, and voilà, soft supple skin that looks years younger.  Now apply lotion as needed throughout the day to protect that new skin.  You’ll be amazed with the difference in your hands.

Don’t be afraid to take your oil and sugar bowl into the shower, this works wonders on the entire body.  You can even use it after shaving as the sugar doesn’t sting like salt does – have you done that? Ouch!

If you are looking for that occasional luxurious scrub, Kate wrote a fabulous (and detailed) post on how to make your own body scrubs using a variety of ingredients. It’s kind of her specialty!

So what do you think, are you excited about the new segment?  I am, it makes that 3 years of beauty school seem a little more worth while :)

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend, I am off to celebrate a fifth birthday, and I have to say it is much harder than I thought it would be.  They just keep growing, dang it.

Saw this idea pinned yesterday.
Tried it last night.
Wonderful.
I have extremely dry and chaffed hands and this worked far better than some of the embarrassingly expensive treatments and products I’ve tried before. Now my hands are so extreme that it may take several nights to get them to kissably soft, but I believe I can get there.
Thanks so much for sharing this idea!

So glad this helped Robin, I have been there. When I worked in the salon I lived in a very dry climate and had cracks in my hands because they were so dry. It’s not fun.
Thanks for sharing!

Found this “recipe” via Pinterest and had to comment on this amazingly simple concoction. Tried it for the first time Sunday on my hands and was completely taken by surprise at how wonderfully it worked. I’m hooked and am now using it in the shower, as well. Making a batch tomorrow to share with friends. Thanks for such a simple, easy and more importantly, effective way to soften hands and body!!

I Use Honey and Sugar all the time. I use it on my face all the time and if you have time put it on for 20 minutes, cover your eyes with used tea bags soaked in milk and it will reduce any bags under your eyes. And then you can have a cup of tea too. after the 20 minutes splash some warm water on face and scrub and then rinse with warm not hot water. then shower as regular it will be like you just came home from the spa. :-)

I have used salt & oil; it is a miracle scrub that will actually REMOVE PINE PITCH!!! And make hands nice and soft!!

Jaymii February 19, 2012 at 7:38 am

I make up a batch of sugar scrub (coconut oil, raw sugar, lavender oil) and put it in a little jar which lives next to the soap next to my kitchen sink. That way, it’s right there when I want to use it.

I just found your blog via Pinterest — and I love it. I’m not a mom, but I like being part of your Huddle anyways. ;) I went out and bought Olive Oil today, and my hands feel AWESOME. Sadly, I don’t have a Pinterest account, so it’s hard for me to keep track of all the cool stuff I find. I saw on another of your posts you were willing to invite commenters to Pinterest — do you still have any invites to send? I’ve been trying to wrangle myself an invite for a few months now! If not, that’s fine — I’ll still be checking back as I’ve added you to my list of daily blogs! :)

Thanks so much for the sweet comments – and don’t worry, you don’t have to be a mom to hang out with us, we just all happen to be. Besides – there’s an inner momma in us all :)

I sent your invite, make sure to check you spam folder. And if you don’t get one in a few days let me know!

Would this work with canola oil?

Reply

Destri March 11, 2012 at 8:08 am

Sure! Any kind of oil should work to help exfoliate. Olive oil is known to have properties that are beneficial for the skin, but I don’t know much about canola.

Saw your blog post on pinterest last night and tried it. I’m a believer!! I took your advise and used my coconut oil with the surgar scrub. I keep a stash of coconut oil that I whip up ( yes, with a hand mixer) with my favorite perfume oil. I loved it so much on my hands last night that I tried it in the shower this morning as well. I now have a new regimine. I absolutely love this!! I scrubbed from top to bottom and not only do I smell awesome, I’m soft everywhere! Thanks so much for the fantastic idea. I’m def going to spread the word on this one!

Reply

Hmmm, I don’t know! I will have to try it. I think if you kept it with coconut oil at room temps it would last longer. Will have to let you know!

I noticed that you said you could even use this after shaving. I just wanted to mention that it’s even more beneficial to use it before you shave. That way, you slough away the dead skin first and get a closer shave. :)
