Ok, so I have had one of those weeks. Both my boys have been coughing and needing extra ‘mummy time’ and my time for TMH has been eaten into drastically. However, they both inspired me to look closer at this wonderful time of year when sniffs, sneezes, coughs and colds abound and how we can go about treating them, but rather than the over the counter cold meds, which have their place, I looked back into my past….
In a life long before being a mummy I spent some time as a complimentary therapist and then as a manager for a herbalists in the UK. Now don’t get me wrong, everyone in this house has had their annual flu jab, and when H1N1 becomes available we will get that too. I know when medicine has it’s place but we shouldn’t forget that nature has given us the opportunity to help ease ills naturally too. It is complimentary to medicine, not a repalcement so these ideas shouldn’t stop you getting your kiddly-winks to the doctors if that mummy alaram bell is ringing like mad!
Herbal Remedies
Umcka ColdCare® is a 1X tincture of Pelargonium sidiodes, a medicinal plant unique to South Africa. In clinical studies, P. sidoides not only relieves symptoms associated with common colds, but also shortens duration and reduces severity of throat, sinus and bronchial irritations. It also helps loosen mucus, making coughs more productive. The tincture can be bought in most health food stores and is sold in the US as Umcka Cold Care.
It was my husband who first came across this product while scanning through many on line medical journals, indeed if you wish to read the whole article it can be found by going here.
I have used it on a couple of occasions where hubby has come home with a cold, and not wanting to catch it myself, taken the dosage as stated on the bottle…. you know what I have managed to avoid all as yet! Here’s to Umcka and no colds this winter, or at least if you do may they be brief and uneventful!

Thanks for the herbal remedy, I like to try something different other than the over the counter stuff.
Yeh, it’s a goodie to have in the cupboard. We still have run of the mill cold meds too, along with my huge supply of essential oils to curtail sniffs and snivels.
We’ll have to check that out. I feel like there is rarely a time where at least one of us isn’t fighting a cold lately. Thanks
I’m suffering from a cold right now….blah! Now I’m going to have to search for the nearest health food store…
It’s good! You put the drops under your tongue 3 times a day, interesting taste but I don’t mind that. It’s been used successfully in Germany since 1980′s and is an industry worth $55 million now! Seriously, it takes a lot for my hubby to be impressed in things like this, and he does his research believe me and Destri will second that. We picked ours up at a local health food store as I needed other items but you could check out Walgreens too.
I will certainly be getting this to go alongside hubbie’s cold and flu remedies. Not sure why, but for some reason he acquires bugs like no other individual on this planet. Not great when you live with a Petri Dish toddler that brings home a bunch of viruses at school!
