Blueberry Cream Pie Bites ~ A Storybook Recipe

Blueberry Cream Pie Bites

I know, I have already had my turn with the Storybook Series – but I had to share the book and recipe that inspired the whole thing, right?  My kids and I have had so much fun with this idea.  The only drawback is now my kids are expecting a recipe from every book we read; though there is a silver lining there.  It’s given us a chance to have fun together, me a chance to practice patience, and all sorts of photo ops for fun memories.  I hope you give one of the recipes a try, or come up with one of your own with your kids, a recipe can come from just about any book.  Now, onto the story…

We were reading Grandma, Grandpa, and Me by Mercer Mayer one night when the idea to make a recipe from the story came to mind.  In the book, they go through the steps of making Grandma’s award winning Blueberry Cream Pie, taking it to the fair and eventually winning the grand-prize.  The critter stories are a hit in my house, partly because they are an easy read at bed time, and I love the expressions the adults have, so true to form!  Like “Oh boy, I am sure glad you are having fun with this, while I am quietly counting to ten to control my temper”!

Mixing Sugar Cookies

You could really go all out and make your cookie dough from scratch, especially with older kids. But I know my kids attention span, and my level of patience would only allow for so much :) .  We only had to add a little butter and water, then mix to make our cookie dough.  You could also use pie crust, but I gave my kids the choice; naturally, cookie dough won.

Making The Pie Cups

Then I gave them a ball of dough and had them press it into the bottom, and up the sides of the muffin tin to form a cup.  I popped them in the oven.

Mixing pudding

While the cookies baked, we mixed up the pudding.

Dash Of Nutmeg

For some reason a recipe doesn’t feel like a recipe until you have added a dash of something, so I let them decide – cinnamon or nutmeg?  They chose nutmeg.  Then we added the cream cheese.  We went about it all wrong and ended up with lumps, darn it.  To avoid the lumps have the softened cream cheese in a separate bowl then slowly whisked the pudding into it.

Baked cookie pies

About the same time we finished the pudding up, the cookies were done.  They poof up a little, so just press the centers down a bit while hot.  They might seam like they are not cooked through, but they are.

Cookie Pies Cooling

Pop them out with a butter knife and let them cool on a rack (we stuck ours in the freezer to speed things up).

mixing in the berries

While they are cooling we mixed in the berries.  I just put a little of the “cream” into a smaller bowl, and then the berries and a spoon.  My son is not a fan of blueberries, so I chopped up some strawberries for him to toss in.

I love how you see your kids personalities come out in activities like this.  My son just dumps and stirs, while my almost three-year-old girl…

mixing in the blueberries

Carefully placed her blueberries on one by one.  When she got to the last one, she said “I’ll put this one right……there.” This is one of the moments I had to count to ten and breath.  I just wanted to dump them in for her!  I really had never noticed how particular she is, but ever since we did this I see it all the time.

Filling the pies

Time to fill them up!  Again, my girl took forever, little scoops at a time.  My boy was just about to lose interest at this point, so I hurry and added his whip cream so he could have a bite.

Hank's Bite

He took one bite, and said “mmm, that’s really good”  set it down and that was it.  What?!  I didn’t even have time to get a picture!  But he was gone playing now.  I swear, men are born with a natural will power that women will never have!  There is no way I could ever leave after one bite.  They really were good!

Eleni's bite

Not my Leni, after taking twenty minutes to fill three cups, she insisted putting on her own whipped cream.  Then sat for another twenty minutes savoring every bite.  “Oh mamma, this is so wummy”  I really need to get that on camera.  Wummy will soon be replaced with yummy, and it will break my heart.

They really are good, even pot luck worthy!  We had a lot of the pudding mixture left over, so you may need more cookie mix than we used.  I ate the rest of the pudding in one sitting.  Again, no will power!

These look delicious and I’m definitely going to try them with my kids! And LITTLE CRITTER.. I was able to pass down probably 40+ Little Critter books to my daughter from MY childhood!! Whenever new ones come out, we usually pick them up.. I love them so much! I even had VHS tapes and read along story book cassette tapes which 25 years later I can still remember the way they were read :)

I am taking your idea and changing it up a little…made the package of sugar cookies and pressed it into the bottom of a 9×13 pan and baked. Then doubled the cream cheese and pudding amounts to spread over that (with the berries mixed in). Then topping with whipped topping. Thanks so much for sharing:)
