We have been sharing our thoughts together now for 5 and a half months. Always open to ideas, providing each other with shoulders and ears for the tougher days of being a mother, wife, daughter, partner, exchanging recipes and top tips on home crafts for the family. It is with this spirit that we are happy to introduce How-To Sunday.

So on a bright, warm and sunny Denver afternoon I find myself sitting here inviting you to read, comment or may be even be a guest on this segment. Our site isn’t ‘our’ site at all. It’s everyone’s. It is about sharing our ‘expertise’ – whatever it may be. Have you ever wanted to know how to shape your eyebrows properly? Or may be know how to strip back that patio chair and prepare it for the long summer months of lounging outside with glass of cold chardonnay in your hand. Or indeed you want to know how to choose the appropriate wine to serve with that dinner party you have been planning all week. Trim your fringe (bangs) or your children’s without them resorting to attending school wearing a baseball cap until the ‘mistake’ has grown out! What about preparing for the first long distance road trip/flight that your family has taken??

I think you are getting the idea!

So this new and exciting Sunday slot is opening it’s doors to all and everyone. We want to hear from you. What have you always wanted to know how to do? Are you an ‘expert’ in your field – and I don’t just mean someone with degrees as long as your arm and qualifications coming out of the proverbial….we all had careers before becoming mummy’s (and some of us still juggle that crazy world). I just know that there are some great women (and men) out there who are holding great resources…..Tina, be warned we will be tapping into your skills as a Play therapist! Helen – my mother in law, as an ex-kindergarten teacher – and one who set up her own in the early days MAKING all the toys for creative play – we will be tapping into your skills too! Destri your on the list too girl! As for me, well, in my dizzy days before motherhood I worked as an aromatherapist so we might even look at how to make your own natural home fragrance – if your interested that is!

If we don’t have a resident ‘expert’ on hand we will research til our fingers are blue or green as is the case for our first how-to next week. All about spring planting! I love gardening. I will quite happily while away the hours in a garden puttering here and there – but – and it’s a big but, I have no experience here in the US of A! Certainly not with all the different climates that this huge country has.. at home, in the UK the snowdrops are out, the purples and yellows of crocus are providing the knowledge that the darker days of winter are almost done, and the daffodils are poking up and waving their yellow heads in the chilly spring breeze. Here, warm and sunny -yes, but a mile above sea level and our daffs are still thinking about sticking their heads into the spring air. Not to be put off though, my dear grandfather who was an avid gardener, always said you have to garden a season ahead – so to planting those seeds that in summer will provide you with colour in your garden, and deliver the fruits of your labour. May be even little gardeners may like to get involved. Sunflowers are always a good way to start………

So with a few ideas up our sleeves we can get going. But be warned, this is a segment for you and by you. And with that get typing away, I just can’t wait to hear from you all.

Grab your gardening gloves, potting compost, trowel and seed trays, next week we will talk you through, how to plant your first seeds for summer.

Can’t wait to see you – be there or be square!

Smiles (and sunny ones at that!)

I have a distinct memory of when I was 8 and my eldest cousin was 15 being given a ‘Round toit’. He was given it for Christmas from his parents and he placed it on his bedroom door along with the stickers of the time, and various other statements of youth. It was divided up into segments, each depicting a chore: vacuuming, cleaning up bedroom, doing the dishes, taking a shower (!!) – I think you get the idea, and there was an arrow affixed to the center that would point to the said task that you were getting ’round toit’. The idea still makes me smile. Apart from running his own business and being terribly organized he seems to do well multi-tasking…. may be he could pass it down to his godson and his brother. I have a feeling living in a world of testosterone, I shall be dishing out many of these ’round toits’ over the coming years.

Feel free to print off as many as you need and dish out to family members as required.

What I always need is something for lists….I hate them, but I need them…. for shopping, for getting organized for day trips, for holidays (?!) and sometimes just to remind myself to put socks on in the morning. I have for years used scraps of bits of paper held together by a clip and stuck on the fridge. No harm in that – it reuses bits of scrap paper that otherwise would have just ended up in either the drawing box or into the recycle bin directly. But wouldn’t it be nice to have a nice piece of note paper to scribble those much needed memory joggers on? Well I thought so, so did a bit of digging, and I know I have only scratched the surface… but here are a few of my favourites.

One for the Brits out there, but also available for shipping here to the US is Organised Mum. I have had this on my fridge for a while and it has just run out…darn. It has room to plan your family meals and write that list of goodies needed from the super market. The only problem I had was my writing was often a little too big for the spaces and I often write out my list in order of the store layout… but for £5.00 it has been worth it. They also do this great family magnetic organizer below.

You should also check out their new range: made by me, I love the calendar children can create themselves. Don’t be put off that it is from the UK- postage is fair, quick and products are excellent. I can vouch for that…oh and both my boys have the baby’s first year calendar. Marvellous.

I have also grown to love Mom Agenda. Oh girls they have some beau-ti-ful goodies. Diaries, planners, cool grocery lists (see the one below) it’s a steal at $7.95.

I love, love, love this all in one planner. It has everything AND it looks great… oh did I forget to mention that it is 15% off at the mo too…. they have many more great items that you should check out and lots on sale too, in some cases up to 50%. Now they don’t come cheap, cheap, but I think you will agree that these little lovelies will make heads turn when you whip then out of your bag to check to see if your little angel is free for a play date on Thursday!

So what little tips do you have or use to stay organized when your world is getting a little crazy? I’m always up for new ideas.

Vancouver, 2010 is here!

I’m pretty sure if you tuned in to your preferred news station last night or picked up the paper this morning, you will know of the sad news of the 21 year old Georgian Luger, Nodar Kumaritashvili’s fatal accident yesterday on a practice run in an event that he loved. I sat last night watching the spectacular opening ceremony with tears in my eyes. I couldn’t stop thinking about him, his family and team mates and the other athletes that not only would be competing, today in the luge, but in all the different disciplines. I’m not even sure what excatly I am trying to say here other than, let’s not take our loved ones for granted, let’s give our children that extra time and celebrate life to the full.

So I had already ear marked the Olympics for this week. Sorry if you are not a ‘winter sport’ kinda person. Still there are loads of things that can be fun. Pick a country each to support and see who gets the most medals, find out one fact about your ‘new’ country and share it at family meal time. Or why not print off and colour the flag of your adopted country by using this website, go to the area of the world, click on the coloured version then print off the black and white version. If you are keen, why not make your own results table or even your own medal!

So without further ado let me introduce to you some new friends….

Quatchi

Meet Quatchi, a sasquatch with a love of travel and a longing to become the first sasquatch to represent his country playing in goal in an ice hockey game.

Sumi

is an animal spirit. He has the hat of the great orca whale, the wings of a mighty thunderbird and the legs legs of the strong black bear.

Miga

is a young sea bear who lives off the coast of Tofino on Vancouver Island. She is part killer whale and part kermode bear and loves to surf. She dreams of landing a 720 in the half pipe!

Mukmuk

is our little marmot from Vancouver Island.

Also available in a set of 4 for $60 Canadian but without the red gloves. Or from $25 to $30 separately.

For a great little video clip of these adorable furry friends click here and take a look.

Okay so my boys are half Canadian and we love skiing so I may be a little bias about this little lot but they are fun and cultural and available from the Olympic store.

There’s lots of fun to be had. Just let your imagination run wild. You never know you might even be harbouring a future Olympic athlete in your house right now!

Did you know that if you googled the word ‘Chocolate’ you get a whopping 141,000,000 hits? Chocolate has been part of our lives for a very long time. In fact the earliest documented use of the cacao bean dates back to 1100BC! There are lots of fact and figures out there about chocolate, and I guess you’d expect that with such a long history, but what we are most interested in is eating it right?! The Cleveland Clinic would even have us believe that there are health benefits in eating this seductively, delectable food group.

Now, I am a long way from being a chocolate expert. I know what I love and I know what I don’t. My husband is a choc-o-holic but only for dark rich chocolate. Me, well I like the dark, 70% cocoa solids too, but I also like a good, and I mean good, milk chocolate. Forgive me if I might offend here, but forget Hersheys, go and treat yourself or your loved one, to something a little more, shall we say, refined, this Valentine’s Day.

There are some well know high street Chocolatiers out there that will we all be familiar, Godvia, Ghirardelli, Green and Black’s owned by the British company Cadbury (and bought just the other day by US giant Kraft) but also a growing number of businesses that are reaching out to us….and let’s face it, chocolate is still one of the top gifts given on St Valentine’s Day, to widen our taste buds. Let me introduce you to some of may favourites.

Izzybelle chocolate sauce has to be one of the closest to home made chocolate sauces I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. Made only from the finest cream, sugar, butter and chocolate, they say that there are 24 servings in each jar….. (humm that is if you don’t have a husband like mine.) Choose from Original, toffee, chili cinnamon, raspberry, orange, peanut butter or peppermint.

We have used the sauces over ice cream, in coffee and a spoonfull in a home made chili con carne gives rich and fullness to the recipe. If you are looking for more ideas then check out their recipe ideas too.

They are a Colorado company that will supply nationally, but not yet beyond the boarders of continental US. However, if you are in the US of A you must try them. Seriously. But be warned this is one for the adults !

For those of you not in the US and unable to get your hands on Izzybelle, then you have to check out Chococo. A small husband and wife team located on the beautiful Purbecks in Dorset, UK. Claire and Andy run a small, yet formidable business that has won award after award. You only need take a brief look at their website to see how passionate they are not only about chocolate, but about the world in which we live.

Now here’s the good news, for those of you reading this in the UK, there are no hidden extras, the prices you see include delivery and gift card.

Unfortunately Chococo do NOT send to Spain, Portugal or Italy as they have found by bitter experience that their postal services take too long for the perishable chocolates to handle.

Same goes for the USA, Canada or the rest of the world for the same reason.

But if you have friends and family who like excellent chocolate elsewhere in Europe, then Chococo should be the first people you consider…my favourite was their Honeycombe Heaven and pretty much all their truffles. They are also my firm favourite when Mothering Sunday comes around!

May be you want to create something heavenly delectible for your loved one…. then let me point you in the direction of this book by John Scharffenburger and Robert Steinburger.

In The Essence of Chocolate, 100 mouthwatering recipes await you.

I haven’t had the pleasure of eating some their chocolate but I like their principal. SCHARFFEN BERGER Chocolate Maker was founded with one simple goal: to create the richest, most flavorful chocolate by sourcing the best cacao in the world and using artisan chocolate-making methods. Their words, not mine, but I like it!

And if diamonds are not your gals best friend but chocolate is then may be you should consider this little mouthful of wonder….from Knipschildt

Knipschildt Chocolatier was founded in 1999 by Fritz Knipschildt, who got his culinary education as a chef in Denmark. The most-expensive chocolate he sells–a $250 dark chocolate truffle with a French black truffle inside–is available on a preorder-only basis. It’s made of 70% Valrhona cacao, which is blended into a creamy ganache with truffle oil. The truffle is then hand-rolled with a dark truffle on the inside and dusted with cocoa powder.

A final, final! Celebrating by yourself this year? Then buy yourself a copy of Joanne Harris’s book, ‘Chocolat’, dramatised in the 2000 film staring the beautiful Juliette Binoche and yummy Johnny Depp, open your box of chosen choccies, pour yourself a nice glass of something and curl up and dream away of your one and only, true love.

First this week, an apology. If you checked in to find some thing fab-u-lous last week, you’d have seen that I had let you down. Sorry. I could say that it had slipped my mind or that I had lost my mind, or both. I have no good excuse other than I started my find late. Then my youngest son, who seems to be teething forever, woke and I spent the rest of the night with him. I awoke cranky and Sunday was much of the same, the ‘if you don’t pick me up now I am going to scream really loud until you do’ followed by ‘if you put me down I am going to continue screaming’. And that, dear friends, is why there was not a find in sight last week.

So I have to work doubly hard this week. And upon request I have decided to launch into the world of accessories.

Now I have to admit that I am not the best person to be talking about accessories. I’m lucky if I change my earrings once a year – seriously! I wear pearls and that is it unless, that is, we are off out somewhere special, which is about as rare as a blue moon. Scarves, I love, they are quick and simple, provide warmth and colour to an other wise ‘boring’ outfit. See our first week for more on scarves. I think necklaces come and go in our lives as a mummy and what you wear round your neck is very much dictated by the age your children. However, my one love that I do keep up with is bracelets. I am getting quite a collection.

The stunner at the beginning is by Unity a Fair Trade company. Handmade of glass beads and brass, this adjustable cuff has accents in teal, olive, and plum colored beads on brass wire. Truly lovely! And for under $13 you really can’t go wrong.
Made by women artisans in New Delhi, India, they are also the source of these beautiful wooden beads which come as a set of 3 for under $15! Paired with a simple white shirt and jeans, you would look completely put together.

This beautiful creation comes from artist Amy Fulkerson. She envisions and designs elegant handcrafted eco jewelry at her kitchen table alongside her four children and bowls of fruit! Amy believes that Hopeful Creations are a re-creation of our earth’s natural and artistic self into beautiful wearable and usable art. “Emma” is a combination of recycled beads from Indonesia. Diamond-cut square brown grey recycled beads and hand-cut rounded teal beads are created in partnership with a fair trade factory. Each handcrafted bracelet is unique because of the imperfect nature of recycled beads. What a great Eco Gift idea! Available through CeleryStreet.com. Take a look at the other beauties there!

I love the colours in the multi-coloured Tagua Petal Bracelet from Earth Lover. Hand made from the Tuaga Seed, it is a real natural beauty. The seeds are very similar in structure to elephant ivory and can also be carved into jewelry, chess sets and scrimshaws. The spiny female palm seed pod weighs up to 80 lbs., may have upwards to 40 to 80 of these encased beautiful nuts or seeds that when polished and cleaned make a wonderful worry stone or paper weight. This is a natural rain forest product that can generate five times the artisan income than banana plantations or cattle ranches – therefore the purchase of Tagua Seeds is an ecological incentive for preserving the rain forests. I lifted that little description straight from their site as I couldn’t have put it better myself. A true beauty to adorn any wrist and eco friendly too.

Wanting something a little more elegant?

Visit esty here. Simplysurina has far too many gorgeous items than I could ever post so you are going to have to take a look for yourself, but these are 2 of my favourites.

This is a stunner I’m sure you’ll agree would make the most women feel simply divine. Pearls from Japan, AAA Akoya pearls with a faint simmer of pale pink can be made into this delicate bracelet, also available with gold instead of silver.

Black onyx and black cloisonne beads come together to form this triple layer bracelet. The bracelet uses 14K gold-filled metal twist beads to create the metallic sheen of the bracelet.

So what do you think? I also fell for the Blueberry Panache Double Strand Bracelet of Blueberry Quartz, Peacock Pearls, Czech Vintage Fire Polish Crystals but you will have to take a look for yourself.

Final fun goes to Celery Street again! A big, chunky cuff style bracelet made from recycled or re-purposed materials. Original eco handcrafts support Brazilian artisans in underdeveloped communities and initiate social economic change while adhering to fair trade standards. This is one that even the most determined toddler will not be able to pull off your wrist. I love the vibrant colours.

There are so beautiful bracelets out there. What ever your choice, chunky, delicate, natural material, eco-friendly, bright and bold or otherwise. They don’t have to be expensive but sometimes in purchasing they can help others. One of my favourites is a simple single stand of coloured wooden beads given to me by my husband for Valentine’s Day several years ago. I have worn it so much that the paint is chipped off and I lost the green version somewhere in Texas. It didn’t cost the earth, but I wouldn’t change it for the world!

Speaking of Valentine’s Day, is there anything out there you want me to help you find??? I have a few ideas but it would be great to hear yours.

As the clock ticked into 2010 we entered into the second decade of the 21st century. Some-when during New Year’s Day I had one of those moments…. no not a give me a G&T (Gin and Tonic) now moment, although if someone had poured me one I’d have happily have quaffed it (let’s just say that I saw New Year in by comforting a teething 15 month old and taking a restless 3 year old back to bed – 4 times!) not quite the ‘Auld Lang Sang’ – cheers and bottoms up with a glass of champers that we’d planned for! No it was more of a ‘this time 10 years ago’.

In Y2K, I had yet to meet my hubby let alone have 2 boys in my life, and here I was thinking at the end of this decade I will have a teenager and a ‘tween in my house! Humm. How time, life and memories change us. I’m not really a diary kinda girl, nor a scrap booker (I love the idea just can’t seem to dedicate the time to actually sitting doing it) however, I do think that it is important for us to show our children what their lives were like if not for them, for their children! So that got me thinking what would be a good ‘find’ to start the new year?

How about recording your memories of 2010 and for future years in a beautiful memory book? Clearly you can make a simple memory book by simply by buying a scrap book and posting photos, tickets to events, games, sports days, etc down and if you are doing scrap books then my first stop would be Martha Stewart. Like her or hate her she has great ideas and products easily available in places like Hobby Lobby and Micheals. If you are just after photos then I don’t think you can go wrong with macs iphoto service to make your own book with photos. We have made several for family gifts and they are tip-top.

I also found this beautiful site called Memory Book which gives simple step by step instructions on how to record those precious moments that happen. It will cost you $50 (but what cost are you going to put on those memories?) and that will give you:

Everything you need from start-to-finish to create the perfect family history book. When you purchase your $50 publishing credit, you use MemoryPress FREE. Your entire $50 will go straight to publishing when you are finished with your family history book.

What will $50 buy me?

1 double-fan adhesive binding ($15 for the binding).

Up to 35 color pages ($1 per page), OR

Up to 175 black and white pages ($.20 per page), OR

Any combination of the above (1 color page = 5 black and white pages)

Or multiple books of a smaller size.

They also do baby books, wedding, personal history or anniversary books. So what ever memories you are making or about to make this year, get recording, sticking, gluing, cutting and photographing…..

May the year be filled to the brim of happy adventures that lasting memories are made from. Bring it on!

If your house is anything like ours, it will be filled with lots of marvelous gifts, pictures, toys and food. All given with love and good will from those around us in our lives. Our family traditions do not amount to much, the token walk after Christmas lunch before diving back into more eating of cold turkey, salads, pickles and homemade chutneys for dinner (like we need more calories) and the start on Boxing Day (26th) of writing our letters of thanks to those who have remembered us with gifts. Not many people do it these days and yet as Candace pointed out in her piece Take Note to Give Thanks, a simple card with a few select words can mean so much. And let’s face it, it is the polite and right thing to do. My boys may still be a little young to actually ‘write’ a thank you, my eldest can sign the first letter of his name and well, my 15 month old would probably try and eat said card or letter. However, this is one tradition that I want to keep going and to do that I need to make it fun and move into the 21st Century. Emails are simple (albeit that there goes the ‘signing’ of names in our house), quick and if that is all your tween or teen or indeed you can do, then so be it. But in the essence of fabulous finds I have trailed my way through that world wide web to find some slightly different.

Ours will be a mix of cards, letters, and pictures. I like these from Kid Printables as they have lines for your children to write on and don’t give the daunting task of feeling like they have to write an essay. There are a good selection of designs for you to use.

This little selection you have to order from My Expression but they are cute never the less and have a great selection to choose from. Prices and quantities vary by style.

What about Smile Box? Move the thank yous into the 21st C in 3 easy steps. 1) choose your design template 2) drag and drop music, photo, movie or words 3) then simply email, blog or print!

I love the selection that Laurie Attheden has on esty. The mittens below are adorable, but may be you’d like to personalize her cute reindeer in circles. You’ll get 12 cards for $8.50.

So that is me for 2009. Next time our paths cross we would have leaped into 2010. If my calculations are correct there will be 52 Sundays no less to fill with fabulous finds. This site it is about us, mothers, parents, i.e. you and me. So what is that you’d like me to ‘Find’? Ideas please, they will be noted down and I promise that I will do my best to search them out and share with all.

All that leaves me to do is wish you all a very happy new year. May it be filled with exciting adventures, experiences, laughter and memories.

So I am thinking that a lot of you will be spending the festive time at home with family, at another family house, on holiday with family, extended family… basically there are lots of extra people around, in our lives and space. We are not alone in that equasion. It can be a happy and fun time, but it can also be stressful and test our patience to the limit – no matter how much we love our blood and kin. We have my mum here from England this year which is marvellous. She is getting to spend time with her 2 grandsons and they are enjoying lots of grandma time.

I would love to say that our house is full of the smell of baking, Christmas carols and tunes blaring out from itunes, and festive cheer (Candace clearly I need to spend some time taking top tips from you), however, albeit this is not an unhappy household things are a tad crazy. I have 2 boys with full on colds and coughs (Umcka helped but didn’t stop!) and a newly flooded laundry room, hall carpet, cat litter and rugs. So I have been a tad testy you could say… and realizing that this is really family time had to take a look at how I was delaing with these, err, extra challenges. I could shout, I could cry, I could kick a box of paper round the garage, I could not do anything and just bottle it up – and believe me I have been known to do all of the above, sometimes at the same time. However, the best thing – humour, laughter.

So this week, no last minute tips to get to the shops for those last minute bargins (your TV ads will do that for you), no finds that will increase that overdraft or put extra $’s on your bulging credit card bill. My finds this week are all free. So when you begin to feel your stomach beginning to churn, your devilish side wanting to tell whom so ever to ‘go suck on a lemon’ or you just plain want to get on a plane to Siberia, one way, take a minute to click on these links and see if it helps. I hope it does. Of they don’t, just lock yourself in the bathroom while the furor continues with a glass of wine!

So here we are – LAUGHTER

1.	Laughing 100 times roughly equals 15 minutes on an exercise bike? Vigorous laughter increases the heart rate deepens the breathing rate, and uses muscles in the face, stomach, and diaphragm.2.	Aside from improving our moods, laughter can reduce stress, help fight infection, and reduce pain.

3.	The levels of two stress hormones, cortisol and epinephrine which suppress the body’s immune system, will actually drop after a dose of laughter.

4.	Laughter causes positive changes in brain chemistry by releasing endorphins, and it brings more oxygen into the body with the deeper inhalations.

5.	Laughter releases anger, fear, guilt, anxiety and tension.

6.	Laughter encourages concentration on “right” attitudes rather than “wrong” attitudes.

Facts found via Dr. Standley in the article facts in the act of laughing.

Now that we know the facts, here are a few things that should get things rolling

Click on this Youtube for instant happiness.

Or this one for the bride who can’t stop laughing

or maybe this Mother of all Pranks, too funny

So there you go when the going gets tough LOL

Okay, it’s a Saturday evening and I have a confession for you. I haven’t given the find of the week much (if any) thought. Sorry. My mum arrived from England on Monday and we have been catching up and getting out and showing her the sights of beautiful, sunny Denver. I had great ideas but they can wait for another time. Then I thought with all the ‘handmade marshmallow’ goodies being created I’d just do a slot on the best white fluffy things that seem to adorn our pages. Finally I realized that I have no hope in bringing you any true wonders this week without just coping out and nicking someone’s ideas and hard work. Well give me credit for at least being honest!

I stumbled across The Pepper Kids and immediately felt relieved that I wouldn’t let you down. This great site has a whole host of interesting finds for you to snoop around. I love their layout and ease of navigating their site. And this was how, late on my Saturday night when my head was telling me to hang up my boots and go to bed, but my heart was saying ‘fabulous finds’, I found a perfect gift for your little ones to create and send to doting grandparents.

Essentially it goes something like this: get your budding Picasso to doodle away with all the imagination they can get on paper and send via email (jpegs) or the original artwork to Pepper Kids. Their experts are on hand to guide you through the process for materials, colour in fills to match rooms or enhancing specifics.

Pricing will vary depending on size and whether you decide to frame or not.

I think they hit the nail on the head when they say, your children can create family heirlooms. I’m pretty sure that the receiving end of the party will always have a smile on their face when they gaze at the masterpiece. A truly unique, and stunning gift.
