Sometimes a girl needs a little something to wear to a Black Tie Affair…or church…or the grocery store, heck why not? I made a bunch of these Rosette Fascinators to sell and I’m pretty much in love with them. They have a satin rosette, lace poms, and then a little drama with pearls draping down. They look great pulling stray strands from the face, dressing up a pony tail, or putting the final touches on a fancy hair-do. I made them in a few different sizes and took some pictures for a tutorial, catch me after the jump for all the details!

Pearls & Lace Rosette Fascinator Tutorial

We will be making a medium size fascinator for this tutorial, but keep in mind you can make this hair piece any size. I made some smaller ones to attach to elastic, replacing the pearl strands with a pearl button for babies. I think colors and different types of beads would be fun in place of the pearls too, just have fun with it!

Supplies:

hot glue gun or fabric glue

scissors

satin fabric cut to 1½ x 44 inches

lace squares cut into 2 x 2 inches (about 12 pieces, more for a larger hair piece)

pearl strand on the spool

felt to match fabric color

snap clip

Start by cutting out an oval from the felt that is about 2½ inches long. Take a lace square and pinch it in your fingers to make a little pom like shown in the picture.

Now put a little glue on the tip of the lace and press onto the outer end of the felt. Repeat around the felt as shown, with about 3 layers or until you have reached the amount of poof that makes you happy.

Next, the rosette. For this tutorial, I just folded the satin in half length wise and left a frayed edge. You can fold the edges in on each side once to meet in the middle and then press in half (like bias tape) if you like, but I like a little fray…such a rebel .

Tie a knot on one end and then fold the little tail over and glue to the knot. Now place a little more glue on the knot and twist and fold the satin around the knot gluing as you go. I have a very detailed post on how to do a rosette here, I just folded instead of twisting for this rosette.

When you reach the end, leave about a 1 inch tail. Add a generous amount of glue to the back…

Then press the end over onto the glue.

Now take the lace and felt piece and put glue on the area of the felt that is exposed.

Then press the rosette onto the the glue and hold in place for a few seconds.

Cut the pearl strands to be three different lengths, I just hold the strand up to the piece and cut the length that looks right. Take the longest strand and glue one end on one side of the fascinator, and the other end on the opposite side like shown in the image above.

Repeat with the other two strands making sure they have a nice drape.

Now cut two small circles from the felt and glue over the ends of the pearl strands. Make sure the edges are secure.

Almost finished! Just cut a little piece of fabric and slide inside the snap clip, and snap closed. Put glue all over the back side (the opposite side of the single prong) and press onto the back of the fascinator. Hold and press until set.

There you have it – a pretty hair piece fit for any special occasion. Pretty, and simple.

Now go and make a bunch!

Here is a smaller one with the folded edges instead of the frayed. Aren’t they fun?!

If you have any questions, leave them in the comments and I will answer them there, and of course if you make any let me know or upload an image to our flickr pool – it makes my day

I feel a tad behind on the Valentine’s Day front, it’s everywhere! I usually love to decorate for the holiday, but with this apartment, it’s proven to be difficult. Makes me miss my heart garland . I had painted and mod-podged these X&O letters to put on my diy chunky shelves from last year. I had almost forgot about them, until I ran across a picture of the shelves a couple weeks ago.

When we sold our house the buyers requested that the shelves stay. With this new move I haven’t had time to make any new ones, so I decided just to rework them. A little yarn, a couple sticks, and some putty later I have a new decoration to hang on my wall. I think it is a great way to add a little Valentine’s day to a front door too. Catch me after the jump and I will show you how!

Simple X&O Valentine’s Day Decor

Supplies:

X&O letters painted and Mod Podged (I used vintage sheet music for the &)

Tacky Putty

Crochet thread or yarn

Sticks

Tie one end of the yarn to an end of one stick, then wrap around the stick to hide the bark underneath. Then tie off the end and repeat on the second stick.

If you look in the supplies picture I had tacks, but the wood was too hard. So I bought some of this nifty mounting putty. It holds up to a pound, so it worked great.

Cut off two strings and tie at the top around the sticks, then take the other two ends and secure with the putty per the instructions on the packaging. Repeat on all letters. Now just hang!

Like I said, I think it would look great on a front door, I just didn’t have that option.

So there’s my little remake, how about you? Ever re- make your old decor to make it feel new?

Happy Thursday friends! I don’t know why I put an exclamation point there – all morning I have thought it was Friday only to look at the calendar…I hate it when that happens. I am working on two new posts for Valentine’s Day right now that are so fun. Handmade Valentines for the kids to give their friends and one for my friends. I am just stuck on what to do for my hubby this year. I mentioned last year what a horrible track record I have, and how proud I was to have come up with something (shown above). But this year? Nada. I need help! Any ideas?

Until then, make sure to check out all of our Valentine’s Day diy’s, crafts, and posts from years past. I have quite a few favorites in there!

Does anyone else have a habit of buying jeans that are too long with the intention of having them hemmed, only to leave them sitting in the drawer for months? If you come in under 5′ 6″ I am guessing you’re nodding yes (or at least that is what I will tell myself to feel better). Especially if you love trouser style jeans like I do. I love that you can dress them up or down making them the most versatile denim I own – but they seem to always be super long. I am happy to report I found a no-sewing-machine-required solution that actually looks great, and not like a hack job. It’s super easy and really quick. Like I have a date in an hour and I want to wear these pants quick. So dig out those wide leg trousers or slacks and meet me after the jump.

Hemming Wide Leg Trouser Pants Without A Sewing Machine Tutorial

I had scored these super cute jeans at a boutique store for $20. That was over a year ago. I actually took them out about six months ago to hem when I found this great tutorial for using a blind hem (which is my favorite hem for these pants), only to find that my machine doesn’t have a blind hem stitch. So back in the drawer they went. Then one day I found my old stitch witchery. Have you ever used that stuff? I used to use it all the time…like even made pillows and curtains with it! Crazy, I know. That is when my husband decided to buy me a sewing machine . A light bulb went off and I pulled out my trouser pants and went to work. I decided if it didn’t pan out, I could just do a straight stitch and be done with it. I am happy to report it worked like a dream. They washed up great and it took all of thirty minutes to do. I actually like they way it turned out so much, that I don’t think I would use a machine even if I had a blind stitch! Let me show you why…

Here is the original hem on the pants I will be using in the tutorial. They were hemmed with a straight stitch, which required a a double fold at the hem. This creates bulk and a little bulge where the edge had been folded over. Even without being washed before, you can see where this fold is. After a few washes that bulky fold stands out like a sore thumb.

Here is an example of trouser jeans that were hemmed with a blind stitch. They finished the edge and then hemmed, requiring no fold, equaling no bulk. Most high quality slacks are hemmed this way. So this is what we are going to recreate today – only without a sewing machine.

Supplies:

hot iron and board

needle and thread to match jeans

super weight stitch witchery

scissors or rotary cutter with mat

a seam ripper is handy if you have one, but you can get by without one

The stitch witchery can be found in the sewing section at Walmart, or at any craft store like Hobby Lobby or Micheal’s. And you know those little sewing kits that come in a hotel room? Make sure to take them, they always have a blue thread that matches denim. Just a tip!

Instructions:

First things first, you have to deconstruct the original hem. I used my seam ripper, but if you don’t have one of those a little pair of scissors will work. To get started just turn the seam up, and find the interior stitch, then cut it. Pull a little and cut the threads as they appear.

Once you get it started, it pretty easy, just pull the seam and the threads will be exposed and then cut. Just be careful not to cut the denim.

Now, that felt good. One step closer to wearing the jeans we bought a year ago. We just need to figure out what length to hem them.

A few things to consider: This style of jeans is normally worn long, meaning they should be almost brushing the ground. Usually you can just see the tip of the shoe you are wearing peeking out. Will you be wearing them with heels, or flats? I have jeans for both. I decided I would be wearing this pair with heels and pumps. So I used the pumps when determining length, and then hoped for the best when it came to wearing them with heels.

With the shoes on, try on the pants and fold to the length you will be wearing them at. You can make a mark just on the inside, or put in a pin like I did to mark.

Now take them off and lay on a flat surface, smoothing out the legs for cutting. You will cut about 2½ inches below the fold mark you made. This will allow for a nice weight at the bottom of the pant leg when finished. Following the same angle as the original hem cut off the excess length. I used a rotary cutter, but still didn’t get a straight line, no worries, we can always get a straight fold in the next step . Don’t stress yourself out about it!

If you have a sewing machine, you can do a quick zigzag to finish off the raw edge. I left mine raw and have washed them a bunch with no problems.

Next turn the pants inside out. Fold the pants leg to the length you marked or determined you wanted and iron with steam. I held my pants up to make sure the legs were the same length, and the angle at the bottom looked good before moving on to the next step.

Cut a long piece of stitch witchery and place just under the edge of the cuff as shown in the picture. You want it as close to the raw edge’s edge as possible (did that make sense?). This will bring any fray to a minimum. Iron per the packaging instructions. I had to iron mine a tad more, it will depend on the weight of the fabric. When you have went all the way around the leg, trim the stitch witchery to the length needed and finish the ironing. Repeat on the other pant leg.

Once the seam has cooled, pull on it to make sure it has adhered completely. There were a few places where mine pulled apart a some. Iron those places a bit more if you find any. Turn right side out.

Now to strengthen the seam up a bit, we are going to add a few tacking stitches to the inner and outer seams at the cuff. Just take the needle up through the inside of the pant leg right at the seam as shown. I made a few stitched and then ended on the inside with a secure knot.

For the inside seam, just pull the needle underneath the fold and then back under it like shown.

Viola! Now put them on and go on that hot date..or go and find the kids you have neglected whilst hemming your jeans. I found mine under the table smashing Kix into the carpet. Good times.

A few notes: I didn’t pre-wash my pants, they had enough stretch in them I knew they wouldn’t shrink much. If you’re worried, wash before hand. The stitch witchery feels a bit stiff until washed. After the first wash, it will bend and feel feel just like the denim.

As for care, I washed mine inside out like I always do and the seam held up beautifully. I had one long stray string after the second wash that I trimmed but other than that the fray from the raw edge was minimal.

If you have a pair of jeans that are straight leg or bootcut, here is a great tutorial for how to hem jeans and keep the original hem.

Hope all my short friends find this useful! If you have any questions leave them in the comments and I will answer them there.

Happy hemming,

Oh friends, I am so excited about these free printables! I have mentioned a few times that when it comes to Christmas morning in my house, the stockings where it’s at. I have just as much fun stuffing them as the family has going through them, as did my mom. There’s just something about finding all the little wrapped presents, candy, and trinkets – and as a child imagining Santa filling the stocking to the brim and leaving it for your discovery. I like to take everything out if its packaging and wrap in my own way, including the candy and goodies complete with ribbon. It just adds to the magic and wonder – who wrapped them up? The elves or Mrs. Clause?

So I emailed my favorite designer, Jenna, and <del>begged</del> asked her if she would like to make some fun labels to really add to the fun. That way the candy and goodies look all sorts of authentic coming straight from the village at the North Pole, rather than the local store. Luckily she said yes, and offered them for free to TMH readers, wahoo!

You can do all sorts of things with them. I like to buy our candy at a candy store so it is “special” candy that my kids don’t normally see, and then a few other treats to mix it up. I just cut out the North Pole Bake Shoppe label and glued it to scrapbook paper to top off some candy dipped Oreos in a cellophane bag.

There wasn’t a chance I could pass up the hand pulled taffy candy cane suckers, I just cut out a smaller label and glued to the one they came with.

She even added a Happy Holidays label that you can use for just about anything.

All you have to do is click on the label you would like to print, right click and then save to your computer. To print just choose fit to page. I put a few different sizes and options of each: three sizes of the Candy Company, two with format to fold for bag toppers if wanted for the Bake Shoppe, and a bunch of the Happy Holidays labels. You could scale to a different size when printing too.

Have fun with these!

Jenna is from the ever popluar {q.a.} DESIGN, where she can create just about anything to make your heart go pitter patter. Just take a browse through her blog and you’ll be greeted by her fresh blog designs. I believe she is still taking clients for the month of January. Just email her to snatch up a spot, they go quickly!

Oh! I almost forgot, she has a free holiday print you can download and frame over on her site. See what I mean? Fresh. I am tempted to make it into a greeting card .

A big thanks to Jenna for helping add to my stocking fixation. Oh, speaking of that – I even have a post on how to stuff a stocking. Serious business.

I’m usually baking like crazy at this time of year but I really wasn’t feeling well one day and thought I needed a break from my everyday life of cooking. I thought I could get out my crafty stuff and make a huge mess, surely that would make me feel better – and you know what? It did. I jumped on Craftgawker for a little inspiration (have you been there? Great place for crafting inspiration), saw all sorts of beautiful handmade ornaments, and I was off and running.

I made these all in one day which is important to me because I hate having crafts undone. My 10 year old son and I made the pom pom ball one together by gluing the balls on with hot glue, I held the foam ball while he worked the glue gun and he was quite proud of that. The shell one came about from tons shells we have collected over the years and the black and white ornament was just from some pretty craft paper that I pinned on with dress pins.

I’m telling you if you are a beginner crafter these are great to do because they take very few skills. Catch me after the jump for all the details and how-to!

Simple Looped Paper Ornament

This is perfect for all you paper addicts, you know who you are! I found this ornament idea from Laura Wears, and loved it.

Supplies:
foam ball
dress pins
craft paper
paper cutter or scissors
spray glitter (optional)
ribbon for hanging

Directions:
1. Gather craft paper you like, a foam ball any size 2 in., 4 in. or larger, dress pins, and paper cutter or scissors. Cut strips of paper 1 inch by 3 inch long.
2. For the first one make a circle with the paper strip.
3. Pin into the ball, this will be the top of the ball that you will hang ribbon from.
4. Next get a strip of paper and pinch it together end to end with the side you want to see on the outside.
5. Put a pin through the paper at the ends.
6. Stick the pin into the ball close to the circle.
7. Repeat over until the ball is filled.
8. If desired spray the ball with a glitter spray for sparkle, I used glittery hairspray

Diy Shell Ornament

These would be perfect for using shells from different beach locations you have been to.

Supplies:
foam ball
ribbon
hot glue gun and glue
regular paper glue
glitter

Directions:
1. Gather the shells you want to use, I tried finding them all close to the same size. Get a foam small foam ball or whatever size you prefer. The foam ball I used was a tight foam ball that can take the heat of the hot glue. My foam ball also had a small hole in the top.Put t
2. Cut a piece of ribbon the length you would like for the hanger and put the two ends together.
3. Put the ribbon over the hole if your foam ball has one.
4. Take a dress pin with a large head on the end and press it into the hole to secure the ribbon. If yours doesn’t have a hole then dab some hot glue on the spot you plan to stick the pin into on the foam ball to help secure the ribbon, then press the pin into the ball.
5. Cut off the left over ribbon close to the foam ball.
6. Starting at the top where the hanger is glued and pinned in glue your first shell on. Depending on the type of shells you have glue the shells overlapping one another or side by side.
7. Repeat gluing shells until they completely cover the ball.
8. Now that the shells are hot glued on it’s time to glitter the shells.
9. I used a white iridescent glitter but use what your like. Paint on the glue with a paint brush and glitter as you go. I used a paper glue that drys clear and shiny, but Elmers glue would work just fine. I tied a bow at the bottom of the hanger but that optional.

Diy Pom Pom Ornament

This is perfect for the older kids in your house, especially in a couple days when they are out of school and driving you bonkers!

Supplies:
foam ball
glue gun
ribbon
dress pin
colorful pom pom balls

Directions:
1. Start by pinning the hanger in like the shell ornament.
2. Begin by gluing the balls on in random order starting at the top and gluing as close together as possible.
3. Tie a ribbon into a bow at the bottom of the hanger if you like.

So there you have it, a few homemade ornaments to get you out of your baking rut .

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!

About this time last year my kids and I were working on gifts for their friends for Christmas. It’s that time again and I thought I would share the Hot Cocoa Kits we made last year that I shared on Marta’s (fabulous) blog. We had so much fun with this project, stretching the projects over a week. So if you are looking for a fun neighbor gift or gifts your kids can make for teachers or friends, this is perfect!

There just isn’t much that a three year old can create that isn’t something only a mother would love. I thought and thought about what my little boy could make his friends for Christmas and finally came up with a Hot Cocoa Kit. Over the course of a week we worked on little projects to add to the kit, and I can’t tell you how much fun we had with it. He got to mash things, melt things, sprinkle things, dip things, fill things….all sorts of sensory play. He is so proud of himself and can’t wait to give them out. Plus I got to take some fun pictures, form some lasting memories, and scratch everyone off his list. Including his teacher, friends and the party favors for our Christmas party. All for less than twenty dollars!

If you find your kids getting restless for the big day to arrive this would be a great project to tackle until it comes.

How To Make A Hot Cocoa Kit

You may choose to only add one or two elements to the kit, but I will give you a list of what we used.

Supplies:

hot cocoa

almond bark or chocolate chips

candy canes and sprinkles

coffee creamer, cinnamon, nutmeg

plastic spoons

marshmallows

mug

various containers and baggies to package

Set The Stage

I have learned that my son has a max attention span of about fifteen minutes. If I expect him to focus on anything longer than that, it always ends up not as fun for him. So we did these projects on different days, at a time of day that I knew he could focus.

I would have everything out and ready before I even called him in the room. After showing him what we were doing I tried my hardest to just let him do it his way. I was amazed at how concerned he was with how everything looked!

Chocolate and Peppermint Spoons

I found that with most of these projects, sitting on the table was just the easiest. For the spoons I broke up a couple candy canes and put in a plastic bag. Then with his sister there to supervise, he went to town breaking them up. While he did that I melted the chocolate.

I then told him to just scoop up a little chocolate and then set the spoon on the wax paper. Even my two year old helped with this.

Then I had them sprinkle on the candy cane.

All done, and they did an awesome job! Onto the next project.

Chocolate Dipped Canes With Sprinkles

I had the chocolate melted and the sprinkles already in a glass for him when we started this. Again sitting on the table, I had him dip the candy canes.

Then place them on wax paper, and sprinkle on the candies.

Again, so impressed with how careful he was! And then I took a bajillion pictures of them. There is something about candy canes, they’re just photogenic ya’ know?

Nutmeg & Cinnamon Creamer

For this I just added a little cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg to a measuring cup and let him mix it up.

Then I helped him make a funnel to pour it into the fun little bulbs.

It was his idea to add the chocolate chips, you can never have too much I suppose.

Marshmallow Bags

This project was really easy. Just lined him up with some marshmallows and let him fill up the little bags. He was a little stingy on the marshmallows. He finally told me “mom, we have to save me some!”

Packaging It All Up

I picked up these cute little jugs at Hobby Lobby on sale for 75 cents. I had him help me fill them up then I added a the rick rack and label.

The spoons and candy canes were wrapped in a little bag and tied with ribbon.

I tied on a tag to the bulbs and then using double sided tape added the fun pom poms to the top.

Then put it all in a box with the mug he insisted on, “cause they’re fancy mom”, that I bought at Ross for $3.99 for four. All done!

For his teacher we added a little instant coffee to the mix and a note.

For the party favors I just added a few packets of hot cocoa instead of the jug, and put it all in a cellophane bag minus the mug.

With the move I was thinking of taking a pass and just buying little gifts, but just seeing these pictures and remembering how much fun they had makes me re-think this. Dang it. Any cute ideas for handmade gifts kids can make? Leave them in the comments!

Hope everyone has a great Monday,

It happens to the best of us – we get the perfect picture, with the perfect smile and lighting, but then there is that foot or head or hair in the picture that we just didn’t count on. Not to worry, using the cloning tool in Picnik you can remove or add just about anything in an image with a few simple clicks of the mouse. Out of all the tools available on Picnik, clone is one of my favorites to play around with. You can do so many things with it, but today we will concentrate on taking out unwanted objects.

I loved everything about the image above, except the little head on the far left. In some cases you can simply crop out the unwanted image, but to get the correct composition in this photo I had to work a little magic with the cloning tool. To remove the hair I had to make sure to replace that space with the iron bar, so I thought this would be the perfect picture to show you how to use the cloning tool.

Catch me after the jump for the full tutorial!

How To Remove Unwanted Objects In A Picture Using Cloning

First, lets go over a few instances that you may need the cloning tool:

remove unwanted objects from a picture

multiply objects in a picture

remove a background from a picture

correct the composition of a picture

improve overall look of an image

In the future I will add different uses of the cloning tool, I already have how to remove a background in the works.

This is a picture I took of Aubrey’s sweet Alli and it was the best little smile I had of her out of about 30 shots. The only problem was my little girls trying to get in on the picture taking action. I decided with the use of cropping and cloning I could make it “the” shot. Let’s get started!

To have access to the cloning tool you will need a premium Picnik account. I believe it is $25.00 for a year, and worth every cent!

Start by uploading the image to your picnik account. You will do this under the library tab and upload from your favorite source (computer, picasa, flickr…) once the image is uploaded, click on it for editing. You can see in the screen shot above that I am under the basic edits tab to use the cropping tool. Click on cropping and you will see a rule of thirds guide pop up. That is the lines you see across the image. You want to center the object you want focus on with those lines for ideal composition. In this case I made her face line up with the lines. This allowed me to cut out a portion of my little one with cropping.

Just click on crop and then make sure it is on no constraints (unless you are trying to get a specific size for printing then use the options listed) and drag the lines where you need then by simply clicking and dragging then on apply.

After the crop I am left with some hair to take care of on the bottom left corner. Click over to the advanced tab (red arrow), and then on the clone option (black arrow).

In this screen shot I cropped down for details, so you editing screen will look a little different. To begin cloning click on source selection (black arrow) and adjust the brush (blue arrow) to the size you need. You can determine the size by pulling the mouse over to the image and you will see the circle (red arrow).

Click on the part of the image that you will use to duplicate and “hide” the part you wish to remove. In this case I want to duplicate the bar. So once you have selected the area you will use to hide the unwanted part, another circle will pop up. When you click on the image now, whatever is in the first circle will appear on the second circle. You can click multiple times or click and drag to clone. I usually click and drag when I want to create a line like the bar.

When you are working with smaller details like the bar, it helps to use the zoom option. Just slide the zoom bar (blue arrow) to where you need it, and then click on the part of the image you wish to zoom in on (red arrow). You might have to adjust your brush size at this point.

There we have it, no more hair! I cloned the bar above, and the rock to the side. Easy peasy.

Again, here is the shot straight out of the camera…

And here it is after editing with Picnik. I used all the steps outlined in the Basic Photo Editing With Picnik Tutorial to improve the overall look of the image.

I hope you get a chance to play around with this tool, it really is a fun one!
