Crafting Yogurt Popsicles

It’s hot out, and the kids are bored.  What to do?  How ’bout making popsicles?  They don’t have to be anything difficult, just a few ingredients and your set!  The trick is taking the project outside, give them everything they need and expect a mess.

I took yogurt with a little fruit blended in, popsicle molds, and put all of them on a table outside that was at her level.

Then stood back and let her have fun.

Sure there was a mess to clean up, but an easy one….

And with the result ending with two happy kiddos, totally worth it!  Plus it has to help with their motor skills or something, right?

Popsicles The Kids Can Make

Supplies:

  • molds or an ice cube tray and toothpicks or popsicle sticks and cups
  • yogurt
  • spoons to fill them up
  • Saran wrap if you use ice cube trays

If you use an ice cube tray, after the tray is filled, tightly cover it with plastic wrap and poke the toothpicks through the top into the center of each.  Same with a cup and stick, the wrap should hold the sticks in place.

Pop them in the freezer until set, place the bottom in a little warm water to make it easy to take them out, then enjoy!

We just made some frozen yogurt popsicles last week. It really was a frozen yogurt recipe that we put in our ice cream maker. Once it was done, to make the leftovers fair for everyone, I made popsicles out of them. You could probably just skip the ice cream maker step, although it did make it pretty creamy and yummy. I might try it without and if it’s worth the effort. :)

The recipe was:
3 cups fresh berries, mashed (we just used strawberries and pulsed them in the blender)
1 cup granulated sugar (if I did it again I would only use 1/4 to 1/2 cup of sugar)
4 cups low-fat vanilla yogurt

Just mix together and freeze – if you’re not using the ice cream maker.

Cindy, I can’t believe you didn’t leave at least a couple links to all of your fabulous popsicle recipes!

I’ve been experimenting lately – best ones so far have been fresh strawberries, TJ strawberry creme yogurt (just the small little container) plus a little honey… puree really good in the blender and pour into the molds. If you need a little extra liquid to get the strawberry mixture to puree, go ahead and pour in some half n half or milk (not much is needed to get it started).

Other one that turned out good were the peach ones. Fresh peaches (I peeled them), Strauss Vanilla yogurt (used full fat cause it is soo good), a little lime juice, and little honey. Puree really good and pour into the molds.

I just tried plums, limes, vanilla yogurt and honey. Haven’t tried those yet – hope they turn out tasty :)

i love your blog! my most recent popcicle concoction is really my left over morning smoothie frozen in popcicle molds. my girls (9 and 7) aren’t a bit interested in drinking my smoothie, but they devour the popcicles. go figure :) the smoothie is delicious and provides 2 fruit servings, 2 veggie servings, a dairy serving, and a small grain serving…i didn’t even figure out the protein and fiber amounts, but they’re in there, too. it’s a complete meal in a glass :)

big blue smoothie:
4-6 ounces pineapple juice
2 slices pineapple (i used canned)
1/2 cup plain, fat free yogurt
1 carrot
2 big handfuls of raw spinach
2 tbsp milled flax
1 cup frozen blueberries

dump everything except the frozen blueberries in your blender and blend, chop, liquify, puree it all until it’s very smooth. add the frozen blueberries and blend until smooth again. sometimes the blueberries will cause the mixture to become too cold to mix–add a little more juice until it blends freely. believe it or not, it’s sweet and delicious! fill a 12 ounce glass for yourself and freeze the rest for the kiddos. don’t tell them what’s in them and they’ll love them! (i suggest drinking through a straw or your teeth will be filled with little pieces of blueberry and flax.)

I just use plain or cinnamon apple sauce for the popsicles. My kids love them.

I have never even heard of that, you are a life saver, I just bought the chunky apple sauce and my kids will not eat it. Maybe if it is frozen! Thanks!
