Diy Felt Craspedia Billy Balls

Diy Billy Balls

I am afraid I now have a thing for felt balls.  Seriously, so many possibilities!  I am just looking for things to make with them now – like this Billy Ball arrangement.  It all started on Apartment Therapy when I was ogling over a home tour and saw this fun flower arrangement on a mantel.  They didn’t mention it, so I googled “ball flower” and sure enough they’re real and called Craspedia or more commonly Billy Balls (my mother is shaking her head in shame right now).  I really did think they were fake :). Anyhoo, I knew just how to make my own when I saw them and I love how they turned out.  I’ll see you after the jump with all the details!

One thing that has me most excited about the new home we are in, are the built ins in the breakfast area.  It’s the first time I have had something other than a shelf or mantel (that I didn’t like) to decorate.  So the first season is fall and I pulled colors from a photo I loved to get a color scheme.  As we talked about before, I am horrible about putting colors together – but I think it’s all working thanks to a color palette I whipped up.  More on that later, but know the color of the balls and the popping corn all have a purpose :).

You can make your own balls from wool – but to be honest I am in it for the “easy button”. So I bought mine on etsy from Handbehg Felts and they were on my doorstep in two days. What’s great about that is that you can get them in so many different colors to match your home decor.

Billy Balls Supplies

  • felt balls
  • floral stem wire – I wanted white so I bought the white string wrapped ones in the floral department at Hobby Lobby
  • large embroidery needle
  • vase and filler if needed (I used popping corn)

Take a ball and insert the needle through the center – wiggling it around a bit to create a hole for the floral wire.

If you are using string wrapped – just pull the string back about a half inch.

Then push the stem into the hole, making sure not to come through the top.

Then cut the little strings underneath.  Then repeat again, and again, until….

You have a whole bunch of them – or just a few.  Whatever suits your fancy.

Now all that’s left is to toss them in a vase.  I used corn as a filler because the color was perfect for the theme, and well – corn goes with Fall…right?

You could use beans of any color for the same effect.

Then arrange them by cutting off some of the length for different heights (I used wire cutters). If you want them to bend just gently pull through your fingers while you pull the stem to one side.   That’s it!

Super easy and perfect for that little bit of softness you need in a hard space, but you really don’t want flowers.  Of the petal or silk variety anyways :).

I can’t wait to show you the rest of it, but I have a few other things I need to wrap up first.

Hope everyone is having a great day, and thanks for reading!

Thanks Courtney! I didn’t really plan the popping corn part – I just happened to have some, and they matched the color scheme perfectly :)

So cute Destri! I love this idea, especially the corn, it is totally fall! I can’t wait to see what else you have done.

I love this idea and just so cute but in my house that would be a great dust collector and afraid in a short time not so pretty. Very cute idea however for a touch of whimsey.

Which size felt balls did you end up purchasing? Thanks!

Hi Valerie, I used 1 inch balls but 3/4 inch would look great too!
