Handmade Fabric Bows and Fabric Gift Tags

by Destri on December 19, 2009

While channeling my inner Martha today I came up with a way to use all this extra Christmas fabric and stuff laying around.  Now before you go and say you can buy a bow and tag faster, let me just say it seriously took me 54 minutes to figure these out and then make…plus take pics of it.  Yep I timed it, cause I knew some of you were going to say that.  So that means since I am telling you how to do it, and you don’t have to take pictures, you should be able to whip ‘em out in no time.  Someone could time themselves and leave it in the comments if they were truly ambitious…Martha would.  Plus they are a ton cuter than anything you’ve bought.  Just sayin’.

Fabric Accent Bow

Supplies:
Self adhesive felt (you can use regular felt, you’ll just need to attach it another way)
Scrap fabric
Needle and thread

  1. Using a cup or something of the like, trace a circle on the back side of the felt.  My cup had a diameter of 3½ inches, but I think larger would be fun for a big present.
  2. Cut out the shape of a poinsettia using the edge of your circle as your guide.
  3. Don’t worry about the center being perfect it will be covered by the fabric anyway.

  1. Cut fabric into a circle or a strip or one of each like I did, however you like to do yo yo’s.
  2. Cut a small hole into the center if it’s a circle
  3. If it’s a circle, sew a loose stitch around the cut hole, then gather and tighten and tie a knot.  If it is a strip, sew a loose stitch along one side,  gather and tighten to form a circle and tie a knot.

  1. Stack the yo yo’s on top of the felt and sew together, secure with a knot leaving the backing in tact.
  2. Peel the backing up to the center.
  3. Cut off the pieces and leave the center as shown.

You’re done!  Now stick it on whatever you would like!

Fabric Gift Card

Supplies:
Card that is blank inside (any size will do, just suit your needs)
Scrap fabric (enough to cover the card)
Heat bond

  1. Take any card you have that is blank inside, I used a small leftover birthday card I had, cut the fabric and the heat bond a little bigger than the card.
  2. Iron the fabric to the heat bond first, right side up per the heat bond instructions.
  3. Peel off the back of heat bond and center card on the fabric, with outside of card on the bond.  Turn over and iron making sure not to scorch the fabric.  You may want to put scrap fabric under the card while ironing to protect ironing board cover.

  1. Cut off the excess fabric using a rotary cutter or scissors along the edge of card.
  2. Fold the card in half and punch a hole in it if attaching to a bag, or you could just use tape if attaching to a gift box.
  3. Secure with a ribbon to the handle of gift bag.

Now won’t those look cute in the little Santa Sacks I made to give my neighbors goodies in?  Glad you agree.

I almost forgot!!  Izzy & Ivy Designs is having a fabulous giveaway, lots of patterns and this cute purse made by Lola herself.  It is there Penelope Ruffles Bag, isn’t she cute?

I would love to see what projects you have to use up scrap Christmas fabric, just leave a link in the comments!

Thanks for sharing these tips with us. Wrapping gift in beautiful way makes it very special. I also prefer to wrap gifts with reusable paper or cloth.

Um…

I think the poinsettia is so darling, I just might make some and glue them on snap barrettes or headbands for some inexpensive handmade gifts my girls can give their little friends. Other fabric colors/designs (besides Christmas colors) would be way cute too!

Way to use your noodle Des!
