Homemade Gift Ideas From Kid to Kid

by aubrey on December 8, 2009

I thought it would be fun to keep the “homemade” trend going and find some fun gift ideas for your kiddos to give to their friends.  Giving their friends gifts will mean a lot more if it is something they put time and energy in.

Slime

This idea was submitted by one of our readers, Crystal, around Halloween.  We didn’t have time to post it then, so I thought it would be a fun Christmas gift for those little hands that love to get dirty.  Thanks to my little one for choosing the purple slime for her friends!  Make sure you give the safety precautions along with the gift.  :-)

Overview:
Make slime from everyday things in the home.

Equipment:
Borax can bought at your local grocery store in the laundry detergent aisle.
White glue
Food coloring is optional,  but makes is more slimy.  I like yellows and oranges, they seem less dangerous
Ziploc bags
Need measuring cups and spoons.

Safety:
Not to be fed to your pet or baby brother. Not good for leaving in carpets or on furniture overnight. To keep almost indefinitely, leave in ziploc bag in refrigerator when not sliming! Not a bad idea to wash hands before (so it doesn’t grow mold) and after (so mom will let you eat dinner) playing with it.

1. Borax is available in the laundry section of your local grocery store. Take a cup of water and add to it 1 Tbs. of borax (approx 4% solution). Stir until completely dissolved.
2. Make a 50% water 50% white glue solution. Take 1/4 cup of each and mix thoroughly.
3. In a Ziploc bag, add equal parts of the borax solution to equal parts of the glue solution. 1/2 cup of each will make a cup of slime.
4. Add a couple drops of food coloring.
5. Seal bag and knead the mixture.
6. Dig in and have fun. Remember to wash your hands after playing.
7. Keep your slime in the sealed bag in the refrigerator when not playing with it to keep it longer. Unfortunately it may eventually dry out or grow mold. Just throw it out and start again!

Edible Snowman

Supplies:

  • Marshmallows
  • Stick Pretzels
  • Mini M&M’s
  • White Frosting

Take three marshmallows and put them on a pretzel to make the snowman.  Poke two pretzels in the middle mallow to make the arms.  Put some frosting on the M&M’s to make eyes, mouth, and buttons.  So easy and super fun for the kids to make…if your kids are like mine, it might take some time to get one doesn’t get bit into.

Christmas Cookie Can

Check out Mom Tried It for a cute way to package cookies.  I’m sure your kids will love helping eat the Pringles to empty out the cans.  :-)

I’d LOVE to hear more of your ideas!

Love the snowmen and the pringles can idea! I know I don’t want any slime in my house. ; ) But it does look like something kids would LOVE!

These are such cute, easy and affordable ideas. Thanks! I have a nephew that I need a present for. He is really into arts and crafts. I think I will send him the supplies in some sort of ‘kit’ to make the slime. He’ll love it.

My 5 year old said to me today (out of the blue), “Mom let’s make a snowman out of marshmallows” and I said, “I know just how to do that”. Thanks Aubrey for allowing me to say yes to something he requested (and know how to do it) instead of saying no. I love all your craft ideas and all the links you are introducing me to!
