A life goal of mine is to create one night a week that people know they can stop by and enjoy good food, good conversation and overall good company. The vision in my head is fabulous. Friends walking in unannounced, knowing they were invited giving hugs and their offering to the festivities. Neighbors popping in relieved they have an option for dinner outside of their kitchen where their children are welcome. New acquaintances stopping in for the first time marveling at the idea, and knowing that as they walk out the door they were glad they came. Oh yes, it is a glorious vision.
My ideal weekly soiree would be casual, no formal invitation, and no RSVP’s. Some friends would show up once a month, surprising me, others would be regulars that I would come to count on. Not everyone would know each other and that would be part of the beauty. I would have the same theme every week so my guests knew what to expect and how they could contribute, leaving no room for awkward exchanges.
Sounds great doesn’t it? Think of the laughter, the stories and the friendships that would be formed. Think of the memories you would be creating for your family.
I have put this idea off for when I was in my own home again, tucking it away for a time that I felt secure with the environment I would be hosting my vision in. Sad, really….keeping myself and my family away from such an experience – the experience of celebrating life with the living breathing people around us. Because in my vision that is what we would be celebrating….life.
Well times a wastin’ and I’m not getting any younger. Far too often I have ideas that I let slip away with excuse after excuse, only to regret the lost opportunity. Not this one. Starting next week…
Here are a few ideas I have for my theme, and I would love your input, please? Just tell me what you would enjoy or share an idea of your own.
Finger Food Friday
This idea comes from a mutual friend of all of us here on TMH. Rebecca hosted a finger food Friday every week inviting people over to enjoy a night of nothing but finger food. I tried this on my nieces and nephews and it was a hit. My sister said that is all they talked about for months. I love this idea because it is so kid friendly, you’re bound to find something your child will eat when it comes to finger food! Every week you could change things up leaving your guests wondering what they will discover on the table. It would also be an easy theme for guests to contribute to.
Pasta Night
This would be the easiest theme. You would provide the pasta – different shape, flavors, and one sauce. Then your guests would each bring a sauce. Having breadsticks and a salad would be a nice touch, and some freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Oh think of the recipes you would gain from this! Again very kid friendly too.
Pizza Night
You would provide the dough, sauce and cheese, and your guests would bring the toppings. Every week would be different and that would be part of the fun, and yes, kid friendly.
Dessert Only
You would provide a dessert, juice, coffee….whatever is fitting for your crowd, and your guests would each bring a dessert. I like this idea for obvious reasons. Really, need I say more?
I know the vision will more than likely be far from reality, and that if I were wise I would start this out with only one family a week. But I have to start somewhere because I know it will be something my kids will look back on and think fondly of. As they get older it will hopefully be a night they look forward to and might even invite a friend or two. Oh I get excited just writing about it!
I hope you join me, even if it only begins with your own family and slowly becomes a community event.
Thoughts?
I shared this on Chatting at The Sky, it has become one of my favorite parts of Tuesday – lovely women with great stories to tell.

Some great ideas. Thanks for sharing them!
A weekly get together with friends sounds like such a fun idea!
So ladies…I just popped over to DeeDee’s blog and she is having a fab little giveaway….they are super cute boots…might want to go say hi ‘eh?
Wow Destri, did you make all that food or go by Sam’s and steal all the samples! Looks good enough to “lick the computer screen” like Maria says. Fajita Night, you could have fun with that one. Sundae party, Soup night okay I’ll stop so someone else can give some ideas too. xoxox
Ah to live the dream. I for one, if closer, would be over on Mediterrean Monday where we’d snack on olives, tapas from Spain. Tuesday would bring about english TEA of course with scones, thick whipped cream and oozing strawberry jam, Wednesday would be for what ever you fancy… ..
umm yu could eat your way down the alphabet too….
Or countries like America – brownies, hotdogs, burgers, anything with frosting!!
UK – cream teas see above, fish and chips (that’s french fries to you!),
France – all the delectible cheeses you can muster – must be french of course! and Crepes
Italy – pizza, pasta and wine…..lots of wine
Mexico – nachos, see Maria’s recipe for marvellous quesadillas….
Spain – Tapas
Thailand – green thai curry etc
get the idea
Hum, now just need to muster up some friends………..
I love having people over, and I love all of these great ideas.
I LOVE this idea. So much, in fact, that we’re starting Finger Food Fridays at our home starting next week. I think you’re right that this will be something that will create great memories for our kids and hopefully help foster even better relationships with our friends, and make new ones too!
Oh your kids will love it! My sister’s kids still talk about it and ask all the time when we are going to have one again. Let me know how it goes and if you find any ways to make things run smoothly!
I read about someone having a weekly soup night. Just make a big pot of soup. People can bring bread, crackers, salads, whatever. I want to do this too, but, at least where I live, people are very uncomfortable with just “stopping by” anyone’s house. It’s like they don’t believe there really is an open door policy.
Same here, so I think it will take awhile for people to get used to the idea, but I am determined, we’ll see! I am thinking about doing a theme for the winter and a theme for the summer, so the soup would be perfect.
I LOVE this idea. I always let my lack of space (small apartment) get in the way of entertaining, but you’ve inspired me to embrace the small space and cram the friends in.
Exactly. I think of all the times I was at a friends house and not once did I think “I wish they would have waited to invite me over until they were in a bigger place” Not once! Let me know how it goes!
i love the beauty of the image on this post as well as the beautiful image you created with your words…friends walking in unannounced. i love this – the beauty – that you are creating for yourself and your community! i plan to copy…starting with an increase in frequency of our little impromtu gatherings out on our street with neighbors to laugh, eat, watch the kids ride bikes and indoor to duel as family “leagues” on wii bowling, etc. can’t wait…
Gotta love getting together with friends!!
Great idea! We do something similar. Fridays after the kids get up from afternoon naps, neighborhood moms (or dads!) start to trickle over with the kiddos. When dads (or moms!) get home from work, they come over, too. There is always lots of pizza, drinks for kids, and drinks for adults. It is a great way to spend that witching hour between nap time and bed time, and it is a fun way to get together with your adult friends and still have the kiddos around. We rotate houses and call it our Happy Hour
Love love that idea. That is what I want to create, where do you live Marie?
Well…the idea is a fantastic one. You will burn out, so my mother in law & I alternated turns and we did it EVERY Sunday. We always had at least 12 adults and 20 plus kids. We did this for 12 years straight but then we moved away and the tradition stopped. I have no regrets about doing it and a lot of wonderful memories with our loved ones.
Destri,
I’m so sorry for the slow reply
I live in Southern Pennsylvania. I think the thing that makes our Happy Hours work is that it is very low *low* pressure! It would be awesome to have a feast of comfort food and local organic fare, but really pizza and drinks is perfect for our current stage in life (chaos and kids!).
Thought of this post again recently when I received an impromptu email at 5:00 on Sunday from a dear mom friend. The weather was gorgeous and her family was hosting a spontaneous “S’mores Night.” She knew it was last minute, but she was hoping we could all get together and take advantage of the first warm evening we’ve had in ages. Sadly, we were unable to go, but I know the other families who made it to the evening had a great time! This sounded like something that would fit right in with your awesome vision of food and friendship!
Cheers,
Marie
I love that idea, it would be so easy. Isn’t funny how the first sign of spring makes you want to throw a party? PA! Thanks so much for the reply.
