I think the thing that makes our Happy Hours work is that it is very low *low* pressure! It would be awesome to have a feast of comfort food and local organic fare, but really pizza and drinks is perfect for our current stage in life (chaos and kids!). Thought of this post again recently when I received an impromptu email at 5:00 on Sunday from a dear mom friend. The weather was gorgeous and her family was hosting a spontaneous "S'mores Night." She knew it was last minute, but she was hoping we could all get together and take advantage of the first warm evening we've had in ages. Sadly, we were unable to go, but I know the other families who made it to the evening had a great time! You will burn out, so my mother in law & I alternated turns and we did it EVERY Sunday. We always had at least 12 adults and 20 plus kids. We did this for 12 years straight but then we moved away and the tradition stopped. I have no regrets about doing it and a lot of wonderful memories with our loved ones. We do something similar. Fridays after the kids get up from afternoon naps, neighborhood moms (or dads!) start to trickle over with the kiddos. When dads (or moms!) get home from work, they come over, too. There is always lots of pizza, drinks for kids, and drinks for adults. It is a great way to spend that witching hour between nap time and bed time, and it is a fun way to get together with your adult friends and still have the kiddos around. We rotate houses and call it our Happy Hour :-) Great idea! We do something similar.
