If there is one thing we moms learn quicker than anything it is never throw out a box – right? At least until it’s lived a second life. Give your child a box and their imagination comes to life. Tie strings and a “megaphone” to it and you’re golden! This shoebox train is a fun activity my daughter and I drummed up together, and to say it’s been a hit would be an understatement. Catch me after the jump for all the details!
Diy Shoebox Train
Whenever I mop the kitchen floor, I line the kitchen chairs up in the living room so they are not in my way. Every time, without fail, my girls will load up all their stuffed animals, bring them down the stairs, and put them on the lined up chairs creating a train. It is so much fun…and then the chairs have to go back. I decided that we needed to come up with a train that would be easier to keep out for them to play with. This shoebox train was perfect. They have had the best time playing with it!

Supplies:
- shoeboxes (at least 3)
- string
- hole punch
- picture of a train (free clipart)
- scissors
- tape
- toilet paper roll
Making the train is pretty simple…punch a hole in the front and back of the boxes and tie the string in a couple knots, and then connect to the next box. Easy right?
Some of the boxes had a couple layers making it harder to use the hole punch. I just cut some of it out and then taped the box so it would stay together.

Then I took the toilet paper roll and tied the string through it. It works great as a handle and a mega phone – “ALL ABOARD!” “NEXT STOP, SNACK DRAWER!”. You get the idea :)

Our train was five boxes long so it made it a little tricky to get around corners. I think three would probably be the perfect length. It has been a hit, the girls even took it to a friends house to play with them. That is a good sign of a successful project to me! :-)
Can you believe it’s the last week of September already? I’m excited to begin sharing some Halloween fun next week, so stay tuned!

On it – like pronto! My kids will love this Aubrey :)
Super fun! This would have been perfect for when we had a masking tape train track going around our living room. Going to start saving boxes. :)
