As I’ve been getting ready to take a three day road trip with my hubby and two girls (4 and 2), I get excited to be able to spend so much time together. So much time together can equal fun or disaster…I’m determined to make this one fun! As some of you probably do before a road trip, I went to the dollar store and Walmart to find some new little toys or activities for them to play with in the car. Instead of just giving them the toys, I try to make it exciting and fun. I put each item in a brown paper bag and label it so that I will know what each of them are. Lucky for me, my four year old doesn’t read yet. If you do have kids that read, you could number them and have a list so you know what they are. So when we reach a certain landmark, or the kids start getting a little restless, I pull out a new bag that will hopefully provide enough distraction until the next stop.
Here are some of the things I put in my bags:
- the movie Tangled
- glow in the dark bracelets (for night travel)
- new crayons (to go with the new coloring books that wouldn’t fit in the bag)
- informational animal flashcards
- Zhu Zhu pets (for them to play with at the hotel)
- new Dora fruit snacks
- Mrs. Potato Head and Mr. Potato Head
I also purchased a color wonder book because my 2 year old LOVES markers, and a Melissa and Doug License Plate Game that I think will be fun for my 4 year old.
p.s. Don’t forget trash bags and ziploc bags to put the new toys and crayons in.
