Kids Crafts Using Fall Leaves

by Destri on September 28, 2011

The leaves are falling and the kids are bored…perfect combination!  Send them outside with a bag, and tell them they need to pick up as many different leaves as they can; different shapes, colors, and sizes.  When they come in the coolest mom on the block (that’s you) is going to let them get crafty.  Set them up to the table with glue, paper, string, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, and whatever else you can round up and let them have it.  I really have found that my kids have the most fun if I give them just a little direction in an activity, then leave them to their imaginations.  They come up with some pretty impressive stuff, and they are all the more proud of the craft when they don’t have me instructing every last detail of what they should do.  I tend to be a little over-bearing in those situations :).

To get their little wheels turning, show them some fun ideas they can make with the leaves.  Here’s a few to get you started:

Kids' Crafts With Leaves

  • Make some leaf creature puppets then give them a box with the bottom cut out for a theater
  • Martha Stewart ~ Make leaf alphabet cards – If you are working on your alphabet, this would be a great way to incorporate leaves to switch it up a bit.
  • Midwest Living ~ Decorate some pumpkins with leaves
  • Family Fun ~ Make leaf friends by drawing around the leaves (my son will love this one!)

I hope this helps with any mid-day boredom around your house.  My kids start driving me batty right around the time they wake up 3 o’clock, so this should come in handy!

Have you seen any great ideas to play with leaves? Links welcome!

Adorable! I love these ideas. We are going to see the fall leaves this weekend. We’ll have to bring some home to do crafts with now that you’ve posted this. Thanks!

Just stumbled on your web sit. It’s really cute and though my kids are long past this stage it’s still so fun to relive them through your post. We “made” leaves one year out of coffee filters and food coloring. So much fun. I still have them, tucked away. Thanks for the fond memories.

Amanda I love that idea, shall have to add it to our list of things to do when the kids are being ever so “helpful” to mom. And I love when parents with older kids remind me to soak it up. It goes fast, no? Thank you for the compliments, they are a great start to my morning!

I’ve always loved those leaf alphabet cards. We just used some leaves as stamps to make some fall apple tree artwork.
