Learning to Count – Activity for Preschoolers

by Suzanne on May 4, 2011

Having fun while learning is the key to teaching children of any age. I know these days there are so many videos and TV shows that teach children everything from counting to reading but this activity is meant to have interaction with little ones. If you don’t have little ones any more than maybe you have grandchildren or nieces and nephews and you want to play with them while taking care of them this counts as playing and education! I did this with my little girl years ago when we had very little money and needed something cheap and easy to do. I used coins but anything will do. Using colored candy can help teach colors as well as counting. Hope this simple idea gets your creative juices flowing and you think of something even better to use.

Supplies:

Empty egg carton

Candy, coins, cereal, grapes, veggies or whatever you have that might be interesting to a small child.

How to Play:

This is what you might say; Lets see how many candies we have by putting one in each cup. Begin  by counting 1, 2, 3, etc. now it’s your turn.  Then let the child count them while putting in the cup.  Of course eating the candies is part of the fun.

Use different ways to count by color, or shape.  May also draw the numbers in the egg holes to teach what the numbers look like.

We love playing with egg cartons around here. My daughter sorts little toy pieces, cereal or coins by size, shape, colour etc. She like to put everything in order and calls sorting “ordering”.

That’s great Bonnie, I’m sure you love it because she is learning to be organized.
