Pinning a Pumpkin

by Aubrey on October 10, 2012

There is so much that you can do with a pumpkin…carve, paint, eat, and now pin!  I saw this idea on Kaboose and thought it would be a fun activity for my girls to do.

  • pumpkin (I bought the pumpkins meant for pie because I liked the size.)
  • straight pins with black, orange, and white heads (spray painting is an option)
  • pencil

Prep work:  I had a box of pins with all different colors in it so I sorted the pins so that it would be easier for the girls.  I also traced the first initial of my girls names for them with a pencil on the pumpkin.  My six year old wanted to do her whole name, which would have been fun, but I didn’t have enough pins.

I love crafts/activities that can easily be used for any age with slight modifications.  I told each of my girls I wanted them to do a pattern with the pins in their pumpkin.  My six year old went right to work creating her pattern of black, orange, white, white, black, orange, white, white…  My three year old wasn’t quite sure what a pattern was, so after I explained what it was, she decided on black, orange, black orange…simple enough.  :-)  She had a bit of a difficult time getting the spacing right and pushing the pins in herself so I would have her hand me a pin, then I would push it in half way, and then she would push it in the rest of the way.  It worked great!  Depending on your child you may not want them to touch the pins, so modify it to work for you and your kiddos.

Happy pinning!

Aubrey
