Quick Tip :: Pre-Washing Fabric

by Destri on August 23, 2012

One question I get asked over and over again is if I pre-wash my fabric, and if so how I keep it from becoming a frayed mess.  Well since this is a Quick Tip post, I am going to give you the short answer.  I don’t always pre-wash. But when I do, I have found that putting the fabric in a pillowcase and tying a knot at the top before tossing it in the washer results in much less fray.  Especially if it is smaller pieces.  One last thing – always check the bolt of fabric for washing instructions, I have had a few that require dry cleaning!

Do you have any pre-washing tips?  Leave them in the comments!

If the project requires interfacing, be sure to pre-wash it as well. Let the interfacing air dry, rather than put in the dryer.
I’ve always put the fabric straight into the washer resulting in a frayed mess. Thanks for the pillowcase tip! It’s always fun to learn something new! :-)

I pink the cut edges.

I cut a “tiny corner” off each cut edge at the selvage – I don’t use the selvage anyways. This trick works pretty good for pre-washing quilt fabric when I actually do pre-wash. Best of luck with other fabrics

I cut a small angled piece off each corner. that seems to do the trick for me.

I remember Dana at MADE suggested serging the edges before running fabric through the wash. It takes a few extra minutes, but is well worth it! Absolutely no fraying!
