Rolo Apple Pie Braid

If you love fancy gourmet chocolate dipped caramel apples, you are going to LOVE this recipe. My love for chocolate dipped caramel apples stems back to my childhood and memories of being on special girl trips with the women in my family.  My Aunt Delena introduced me to huge delicious caramel apples at a specialty chocolate shop one year, and they have been something I seek out whenever I am looking for a special treat.

I’ve started a tradition of making my own specialty caramel apples every fall with my own family. A few weeks ago I was thinking about how much I am looking forward to the tradition this year and an idea popped into my head. The idea was for a dessert I could make that would be like eating a chocolate dipped carmel apple. I new I had to try it ASAP.

After making this dessert and waiting the 20 minutes for it to cook, it was all I could do to wait long enough to snap a couple photo’s before shoving it in my face.  Lets just say, I have actually knocked my own socks off with this! You’re gonna love me for this simple and delicious, gourmet tasting dessert…catch me after the jump for the details.

Rolo Apple Pie Braid

Carmel Apple Pie Braid

Serves 8-10

Ingredients:

2 pkgs. refrigerated crescent rolls

2 green apples, sliced a quarter of an inch thick and 1 inch long

25-30 rolo candies, unwrapped and cut in half

1 tsp lemon juice

4-5 tbsp cinnamon sugar, divided

3-4 tbsp flour

1 tsp vanilla

1-2 tbsp melted butter

On a large cookie sheet or stone, using two pieces at a time, form a triangle, place triangle of dough down, overlapping onto each other to form a Christmas tree shape.Use your hands or a rolling pin to roll or press creases until they are smooth. You want to have an area of dough wide enough to put the filling on before you start folding over the thinner lengths to form the braid.

Combine chopped apples, lemon juice and 1 tbsp cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl until apples are coated well. Carefully spoon apple mixture, evenly, onto center part of dough from the top to the bottom. Next evenly scatter the rolo pieces onto of the apples. Fit as much as you can even if it seems to be overflowing, you will be glad you did when it comes time to eat it.

Starting on one end, take thinner edge pieces and pull them over to the opposite side, covering mixture as you do so and then press them down, repeat until all pieces are folded over and securely pressed down. I like to pull each end up a little and press it firmly so that the goods won’t ooze out.

Once your danish is all fastened up, combine remaining cinnamon sugar, flour and vanilla. Mix well, drizzle melted butter into mixture until it starts to hold together a little bit. Sprinkle that mixture on top of Danish and place in a 350° oven for 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned.

I want one right now just thinking about it. I hope you enjoy this simple and delicious fall recipe.

I was thinking the same thing! Is there such a thing as Diet Rolos, lol. My all time favorite candy from by gone years.
This recipe looks so good I just may have to look the other way!

You two are so funny, this really is a bit over the top, but if you ever have a reason to indulge this would be a wise way to use it. Rolo’s are awesome!

I made this last night for our Downton Abbey showing. They ladies loved it!!! It was very yummy. FYI Maria doesn’t peel the apples, I didn’t either and it tasted great!

So glad your lady friends liked it. We might as well leave the peels on so we can pretend it is a little healthier. :)

O.K. Maria I am dying to try this recipe, but for the life of me cannot figure out what you mean by lying down the dough 2 pieces at a time to form a tree. Once you lie down the dough does it end up being smaller at the top than the bottom? Do you just use one triangle of cressant roll or put two together to make a larger triangle and then work your way down with the rest? These may be really silly questions, but I just can’t quite picture it in my head. HELP! You are wonderful by the way.:)

Amy, I am so sorry for the confusion. I am going to make it tomorrow and take a picture of this step. You do put two pieces together to make a larger triangle. It is the same width all the way down. It will sort of look like this ___||___ just pretend they are touching and imagine there is another line turning each one into a triangle. This is very hard to explain. I will get the picture up for you tomorrow.

Great, I was confused about this too! Looking forward to the picture.

Hi Maria, this sounds as if it will go down a treat with my family! Please could you explain what ‘crescent rolls’ are for me. I’m think croissants…is that right?

Hi Linda, I think your family will love this, I made it for some friends over the weekend and it was a huge hit. Crescent rolls can be found near the refridgerated biscuts and such at your local grocery store. Pilsbury makes lots of refridgerated things like pizza crust, cinnamon rolls, biscuits and breadsticks. They also make crescent rolls, they come in cardboard tubes that make a loud pop when you open them. Most stores have a store brand that is a little cheaper. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

Ohh… I am definitely going to try this tonight! One question though… your ingredient list says 2 pkg crescent rolls… but in the picture it look like you only used 1 pkg. The pkgs I usually buy have 8 crescent rolls in them…so would I only need 1 pkg?

Hi Becky,
The recipe is enough filling for two packages, I have made it all different sizes. The cooking time is still the same. I actually used two packages in that picture I just took the picture before laying all of them down. I guess it depends on how many people you want to feed with it. Two packages is enough for 8-10 Adults. I wish I was making this tonight. It is so yummy. I hope you enjoy it.
