Simple Headband Solution For Little Girls

by Destri on February 20, 2010

Nothing fancy today ladies, just practicality. I have a little one with quite possibly the worst runny nose known to noses.  Her hair is at a length that is to short for a pony tail but long enough that when clipped back it still makes its way into the mess.  I tried everything today – bows, clips, and even a headband.  But the one I have has a little gather on both sides and though it’s cute it bugs her.  I think it itches due to the gathering and the elastic is a little to stiff,  so I had to make one.  With her on my lap while sewing and on my hip when ironing.  Yes, that is the kind of day we had.  We managed to whip this little headband out and it worked perfect.  It lays flat, is plenty stretchy so as not to irritate the wee one, and she left it alone for the rest of the day. Here’s how we made it:

If you’ve had a little girl in the last ten years you no doubt have a few of these laying around.  The stretch in the nylon is perfect because it has enough give that the baby doesn’t quite feel it there; and that is exactly what I needed to accomplish today.  Since hers do not  fit anymore, I used a piece of one for the headband.

Again, nothing fancy…we were going for comfy and functional!

  • Measure her head where the headband will lay.  Cut a piece of fabric 3 inches wide and 2½ inches shorter than that measurement, and a piece of nylon that is a little over an inch wide and three inches long.  Example: I measured 20 inches for my little girl, so I cut my length at 17½ inches.  You can adjust this if you don’t think there is an inch of give in the nylon.
  • Sew the the long sides of the fabric, right sides together, with a ¼ inch inseam.
  • Turn right side out and press with the seam running down the center, and the ends turned in ¼ inch.
  • Place a ½ inch of both ends of the nylon inside the fabric ends, pin and sew the ends closed over the nylon.  This should leave 2 inches of the nylon exposed.
  • Viola!  You’re done!

**Update** If you are using this for a baby you will want to make the headband width around two inches instead of three.  Really one inch would be fun for an adult headband, just do what works!

Seriously a twenty minute project, if that.  If you’re like Aubrey, you could hurry and make one to match her dress for church today…she would totally do that.

Now I am in need of a little inspiration…..see this fabric?

Isn’t it fun?  I love it.  Love.  I just don’t know what to do with it!  I thought about doing a version of this idea, just stack them four high.  Then I was thinking I could make the kids some big bean bags to sit in.  What do you think?  Any ideas?

One last thing before I go and disinfect my house…..

Look at what my sis gave me for Christmas.  Yeah, she likes me.  You should see what she filled my stocking with for my hubby, good stuff…;)

I shared this over on Twice Remembered Cottage’s Make Your Monday, and ASPTL’s DIY day.

I love the orange and green materials you have. What a cute idea you linked to – the hanging book shelf. Another cute idea would be craft aprons or oversized craft vests for little ones. Or sew them together in small blocks like a mini quilt and frame it or hang it on a rod for a wall decoration.

If you dont have any old headbands lying around your house, you can always use a knee high-they have the elasticity youre looking for and they are nice and soft for you babe’s head.
