Over a year ago I wrote a post about one of my sanity savers - crafting letters. It surprised me to find that it was one of our most popular posts for 2011. I guess sometimes, simple is best. As is snail mail.

It gives the opportunity for kids to be creative, practice writing skills, and connect with people – all in a way that requires very little supervision and supplies. So Aubrey and I talked it over and decided it needed a series of its own. Once a month we will share an idea for cards your kiddos can create and send to love ones; starting with a Shamrock Card For St. Patrick’s Day. Catch me after the jump for more details on the series and the card!

We plan on having a resource page for the series, but for now just know all you need are some basic art supplies. For this card we used watercolors for the shamrock prints, or you could use an ink pad (washable ink!). Any blank cards will do, I bought a big pack at Micheal’s to have on hand.

I showed them how to make a shamrock with their thumbprints using the water color, and then turned them loose. Okay, kind of – I have a hard time with this!

The little one wanted to use her finger, and really didn’t grasp the whole Shamrock thing – but that’s okay, I’m sure grandma will still love it

Then I let them paint the inside and used little letter stamps to write “We’re so lucky to have you!” on the outside. Of course the kids had no patience to wait for me to stamp it on theirs…

so they did their own.

When they were finished with the others we had our own little collection of cards for St. Patrick’s Day. Now all we have to do is mail them out!
I hope everyone has fun with this series, it really has been a favorite activity around my house. And you should see the mail we have received in return – s0 fun!

That is so cute! What a great idea
Snail mail is the best–I love that you let them do whatever they wanted with the paint.
Beautiful creations.
You know, I learned that from you!
I remember when you did your egg basket card one year, and you let your little girl do it her way. I remember thinking I would have had hard time with that, and placed their little thumbs right.where.they.should.be.
But where’s the fun in that?
So fun that you noticed – I was thinking of you when I let it go
Aww, thank you for sharing that with me!
Made my day. Also, I had forgotten about our little egg basket cards–we need to do those again and make some shamrocks as well. Lots of fun thumbprint fun to be had!
