Snowflake Fun

The time has come to begin decorating for Christmas!  We have a tradition of setting up our Christmas decorations the day after Thanksgiving.  It gets me so excited to be able to start listening to Christmas music, watch the classic Christmas shows, and enjoy snow…..WAIT back up a minute.  I live in Texas now!  That equals…no snow.  Hmmm…time to make our own.

Today we created our own snow to make it feel a little more like home.  It was so easy and a lot of fun to create our winter wonderland.  We hung up all these snowflakes in the toy room, but would also be fun in your child’s room.

Supplies:

  • white paper
  • scissors

Really, that’ s it!  Unless you want to make them sparkly then you need:

  • Elmer’s glue
  • paper plate
  • glitter

Unless you want to create a winter wonderland then you will need:

  • a hole punch
  • string
  • tape

I love this craft because it was not only fun, but educational in a couple different ways.

  1. To begin making the snowflakes you take a white sheet of paper and fold it up a couple times, this was good pratice for my three year old…hand eye corrdination.
  2. Then you take the scissors and cut different shapes out all over the place.  This was great cutting practice!  My daughter had a little bit of a hard time holding the paper, so I held if for her while she cut.
  3. Then the fun part, opening it up to see what it’s going to look like.
  4. Next put Elmer’s glue on the snowflake.
  5. Sprinkle glitter onto the snowflake.

After your snowflakes are dry, hole punch the edge to attach the string.  Then tape them to the ceiling and enjoy your masterpiece!

I love making snow flakes. I have never thought about putting glitter on them though. We are staying home this year so I want to ‘really’ decorate our house. We are usually in Utah and I only get a few of our decorations out. I am such a loser, but I am turning over a new leaf for thisyear and I think we can totally go to town with these homemade snow flakes. Thanks for the idea.

I am going to ry and do a homemade tree this year, these will be perfect! I love that you can tell that you let her do them, that it is her handi work, and I love them hung in her room. I will enjoy all the snow for you…and shovel it, wade through it…you know, good stuff!
