I don’t think my girls ever get tired of making jewelry! :-) We had never used straws as beads, so we decided to give it a try. The bracelets that my daughter made for all of the girls in her dance class and the teacher, turned out so cute! She was so proud of them and all the girls loved them. My toddler was even able to get the straw beads on the pipe cleaner by herself. With both my girls, ages 4 and 1, engaged in the same activity…that my friends is what I call success! Catch me after the jump for more details.
Straw Beaded Bracelets
- straws in a variety of colors
- pipe cleaners
To make the beads, cut the straws into a variety of lengths. Depending on the age of your child you may need to cut them or you can have them do it. My 4 year old loves to use the scissors, so she had a fun time cutting them…especially because they would fly around the room when she cut them. :-) It worked out great because my 1 year old loved to pick them up.
After all the beads are cut up, let them create. It’s important to let them create without telling them what to do. This would also be a great opportunity to talk about patterns and how they can change the way the bracelets can look with different colors.
To finish off the bracelets, measure their wrist and then twist the two ends together at the right size. I then trimmed the ends just a little bit, then slid them back underneath the straws.
They turned out pretty cute and all the ballerina’s loved them!
