Strawberry Shortcake Dessert

by Maria on May 3, 2011

Last week I let you in on my families favorite ice cream recipe. This week I am sharing our favorite cake. My mom has probably made this cake at least a couple hundred times in her life. She has seven children and almost all of us would request this cake for our birthday…..every year.

I love this cake because it is so easy to make. It has basic ingredients and it makes a large sheet cake so it is great to take to pot lucks and parties…..or you can eat it all yourself. :)

Fresh or frozen raspberries also work well in this dessert, and one of my friends always uses the frozen berry blend of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries when she makes it. Do whatever makes you happy.

Strawberry Shortcake Dessert

1 white cake mix, made according to package directions and baked in a sheet cake pan
1  8 ounce package cream cheese
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1  8 ounce container whipped cream
1  4-3/4 ounce packet of Danish Dessert (you can find it by the jello in your grocery store) Danish Dessert comes in two flavors-Raspberry and Strawberry
3-4 cups fresh or frozen berries

Cool cake completely. Mix cream cheese and powdered sugar until fluffy. Add whipping cream and mix until well blended. Spread cream cheese mixture onto cooled cake. Prepare Danish dessert according to directions on back for Tangy Danish Pudding. Let cool slightly and then add fruit. Spoon fruit mixture evenly over cream cheese mixture and refrigerate until you serve it. Also refrigerate any leftovers.

This is a sure hit. I took it to a party last week and barely made it home with this little piece to eat for breakfast. :)

Hope it can be a family favorite for your families too.

Maria

I love danish dessert! My mom would use it when she made Strawberry Shortcake as well & I would always sneak into the kitchen and eat it out of the pan with a spoon…then lick the pan…and want to make more. :) I haven’t tried this recipe before, it looks dangerous! :)

I’ve never heard of “danish dessert” or noticed in the grocery store. Will have to see if I can find some – this sounds great and we need something that will help us feel like it’s spring here in northwest Ohio where it’s still quite chilly and rainy.

When I lived in Arkansas I couldn’t find it in the grocery stores there. I had to have my mom send it to me from Utah. Let me know if you can’t find it.

I think it would be the perfect Mother’s Day Dessert.

Hi Maria… I am so excited to try this… this week!!! Question for you….. do you use WHIPPED CREAM or WHIPPING CREAM? When i think of WHIPPED cream i usually use COOL WHIP… when I think of WHIPPING CREAM…. that is somehting i usually purchase in the dairy section with creamers and such. Just wanted to be sure I didnt misunderstand… in the ingredients section it says Whipped Cream and the “how to make” section it refers to WHIPPING CREAM.

Hey Erica, I have actually made this, and it was delicious! You use the cool whip type, and I kind of folded it in. Glad you reminded me of it, with all the spring strawberries!

This sounds sooo darn good going to make it for Mothers day dessert, in fact going to double it. Let you know how it went over.

I use angel food cake torn up for the bottom portion. Fat free cream cheese, and sugar free strawberry glaze, fat free cool whip. My son makes this all time for us.
