I am a little hesitant to introduce you to the author of today’s bullet list. I fear you’ll never come back. So before I go any further just promise you will. Now pinky swear. Thank you, feeling better now.
Have you met Disney? Most of you probably have but just in case there are a few of you who only read us daily *ahem* let me enlighten you. She is the lovely behind Ruffles and Stuff, and she is my new crush. I found her about a month ago by way of this project then went through her entire list of tutorials, thinking she must have ideas coming out of her ears. She could look at anything that would normally be tossed and tell you exactly what you could do with it to make it pretty. To top it off she has amazing images, a humble writing voice, and she seems to be about one of the nicest gals you could ever share a cup of coffee with. Now you know why I am worried. She’ll be on Martha one day, I just know it.
She has a great list for us today…enjoy!
Disney from Ruffles and Stuff
Destri, thank you so much for inviting me to “The Bullet List”! I’m so excited!!I love to recycle and reinvent things in my home. In fact, it practically takes a miracle for me to buy something new! So, I thought it only natural that I should do my bullet list on just that subject! So, I give you:Unintended Purposes;
12 ways to repurpose everyday items!
- Turn your picture frames into table trays. They’re great on a dresser, or coffee table, and you can add pictures, fabric, or pretty papers to make them fun! My favorite one is a little 4×6 frame in my kitchen that I use for my sugar and coffee spoon!
- Use book pages as framed art. I especially love this in children’s rooms. I think older, classic books are the cutest, but you can also use pages from a book with your child’s favorite cartoon character!
- Fill salt and pepper shakers with glitter, to keep kids from dumping too much! (make sure that your glitter will fit through the holes!) Kids love the idea of “peppering” they’re artwork.
- Use pretty necklaces as curtain tie-backs. I use faux-pearl necklaces from the dollar store on my bedroom curtains, and they are my favorite part of the room!
- Try a clear plastic shoe-organizer to keep all your small arts and crafts supplies in. Then you can see what you have, and tuck it neatly away inside a closet door!
- I love my white beaded ceramic tissue box holder, but I never use tissues, so I keep it in my kitchen as a plastic bag holder!
- Turn a copy of your favorite book into a clock! (here’s a tutorial)
- I love to use curtains in my closets instead of those horrible sliding doors. That way you can open both sides at once! The doors should come off easily, and you can either install a curtain rod, or use heavy-duty rope to hang the curtains (just be sure the rope hides nicely behind the door frame)
- Try refashioning some of your little one’s clothing, to make them fit longer, or to cover stains! It is easier than you think, and there are tons of tutorials out there! And-hey-if you mess up, it’s too small anyway!
- If you ever see those dirt cheap little carpet samples, snatch up a couple to use in the back seat of your car. I scored pink ones for mine! And you can even stencil on your kids initials for their special assigned seats!
- Keep your baby’s changing table around for a while. They make great book/toy shelves in a toddler’s room! And you can save the top section for special things that you don’t want them to reach. Have a garage-sale changing table? Give it a couple of coats of spray paint in a super fun color, and it will be even better!
- Instead of putting them in the yard sale, save your mismatched bed sheets as free fabric! They’re so great for projects that use a lot of yardage. I once made a gorgeous Anthropologie-inspired ruffly shower curtain for my bathroom, and no one ever knew that it came from a white sheet!
A big thank you to Disney for such a great list, I love every single one of these ideas, all original. Now go check out her site, afterwords I am sure you’ll think twice before getting rid of anything. Oh I almost forgot! Our Bullet List authors favorite part…your input!
What ways have you creatively repurposed an item that would have other wise been tossed?
Did you check out the book? For the love of all things good check out the book.

I love the idea for an unused frame as a spoon rest… I have one sitting right in front of me that I knew I wanted to do something with but not what…it was 99c and definitely needs a little paint then – wow I’ll be making even more tea just to see how clear I was…err well Disney was …!
Destri, you were right, Disney you really are a star in the making and it’s good to know you before you hit Martha that way we can all say you’re our friend when you are on TV!!!!!!!!!!!! Marvellous and magical, thank you.. now where’d I put that frame again?
I have a box full of clothes with the intention of ‘re-fashioning’ just haven’t had the time, but I have a few that I have done at of sheer necessity…but you ladies have seen those
Super ideas on re-purposeing, love the idea of carpet squares for the kids, when they get all stained up you can toss if you want and not worry about your car carpet getting stained.
I like taking big ol’ canning jars and putting collectables in them and displaying them, like beach shells, rocks, stuff that my kids collected. Also taking old chocolate boxes (such as 2lb. See’s candy, my family gives as gifts for holidays) wrap the box in pretty paper and use in your drawers for organizing panty, hose or a catch all in the bed stand.
Again…the queen of organization. My sister uses the carpet remnants under her car seats so they don’t leave indents when they are gone!
Disney turned me into a pack rat a while back. I used to throw things away, and it felt good, now I ask myself WWDD LOL!
Destri! Thank you so much!! You just about made me cry when I read your into. You are just the sweetest person ever
)
aahhh, I meant every word!
Love the ideas on re-purposing. I am not crafty enough to do some of them…but I have a TON of old picture frames…surely I can pull that off! What an adorable picture as well!
So I just subscribed to Disney’s blog on Tuesday, so fun that I should find her here today! I love her tutorials and her ability to refashion her little girls clothes is inspiring. I’d have to say that my crowning re-purposing achievement to date is the play kitchen my husband and I made for our daughter.
People, you really must go check out Miranda’s kitchen! It is adorable!
Thank you Destri! That is so sweet of you.
I also LOVED it Miranda! I’ve been trying to talk my husband into doing it…I guess I might just have to get to work. So adorable!
These are great ideas! I love the shower curtain idea at the end of the list — that would never have occurred to me. Thanks for hosting Disney!
My current repurposing project includes cutting my hubby’s “ready to toss” dress shirts into eight-inch squares. Each shirt, literally cut in every possible place, yielded about 14 squares. Soon all of the striped and plaid squares will join some of his recycled jeans for a new life —- a quilt!
I posted awhile back about repurposing — http://sherlonkahkai.blogspot.com/2009/02/repurpose.html
so I have heard of people using jeans for a quilt but never the shirt, great idea, I will have to go check out your post!
I recently found Disney as well and you are probably right about the ideas coming out of her ears. I love her blog and these are GREAT ideas!! I rescued a bunch of old sheets from my M-I-L and they made the best little nightgowns!
oh that is a fantastic idea, they would be soooo soft.
I’m addicted to those cheap curtain wires with clips from IKEA. I use them in the laundry room for hanging delicates, and in the schoolroom for the kids’ artwork!
Oh my, I even have one of those….what a great idea, now you have my wheels turnin’.
Wow! I just got lost on Disney’s sight for like an hour. She is a.m.a.z.i.n.g. I could learn alot from that littel lady. I am so in awe right now I don’t really have any more words. I can’t believe how creative she is.
So glad I found you all (courtesy of Disney) and this site. I’m subscribing right now!
Thanks Cindi, look forward to seeing you around!
Wow…I’m awe strukin’ not only by Disney of course, but everyone’s comments! I soooooo needed this bullet list to escape from the real world for a minute. It’s been a HARD day! Thanks ya’ll! I’m feeling much better!
Those are great ideas! Everything she does is amazing, and it is so wonderful that she shares her talents with us!
