This post is part of the Boutique Style For Less Challenge. You will find all the tutorials from this series here. And yes, there is some boy stuff!
For the last five days I have had two sick kiddos, of course I did. The minute I set a time line on things I want to get done, that’s what happens. Am I horrible in saying I don’t mind so much? They turn into snuggle bugs, I love it! Anywho, back to the challenge. I guess now I will have to extend it a week, lot’s to do! How are your projects coming? Make sure to come and link them tomorrow!
Now onto today’s project. I saw a pair of pants at Gymboree with these sweet argyle appliques. Loved them, soI decided to add my own twist. They used solid colors, which were cute, but I have an immense amount of scraps, so that is what I used. Don’t tell ‘em, but I think mine are cuter.
Plus you don’t need a sewing machine! Here is how to do it:
Argyle Applique Tutorial
Supplies:
- pants, or whatever your sticking them on
- scrap fabric
- needle and heavy duty thread, or top stitch thread
- regular thread
- Heat n Bond
- light interfacing (optional)
Cut your scraps into diamond shapes. Mine turned out to look a little more like a kite, but I decided to roll with it. I had three larger ones and four smaller ones. Lay them out on your jeans to make sure they are the size you want. Apply Heat n Bond to the wrong side according to packages directions.

Then lay them out on the pant legs in a way you like. I had two large ones and three small ones on side, and one large and small on the other. Set with the iron.
Using the regular thread sew a running stitch around each diamond. Surprisingly, this didn’t take as much time as I thought.
Now with the heavier thread sew an X through each diamond. I didn’t draw on a guide, but you could. Just make sure it will wash off. I took a patch of lighter interfacing and ironed on the wrong side of the jean over the stitches. You don’t have to do this, I just figure they will hold up longer with her pulling her legs in and out.
You are done!
The button on them was a sad blue one, so I changed that out for good measure.
A little time, but boy do they dress up a $3 pair of jeans from the thrift store. Perfect for my challenge, boutique chic on the cheap!

I needed a shirt to match of course, and Izzy n Izy designs has a free applique that is so cute! I used the same scrap fabric for it as I did on the jeans so they go great together. I bought the shirt at Target for $4.00, and that was the regular price!
Isn’t she cute?! And free! The template was very professional and it was quick and easy to pull together. Right now on their blog, if you post a picture of your applique to their flickr they will send you their Abby applique patterns for free. That’s at least a $12 value, so I figure this project is payin’ me.
See that guitar? It will be perfect to add on a shirt to go with Hank’s jeans I made don’t you think. And the skull? Oh you know I have something coming up with that! Go here for the template and tutorial.

Here is a picture of her in them. You have no idea how hard I had to work for this. The girl hates having her picture taken. The bow you ask?

You will find the tutorial for that right here! It is soooo easy.
Thanks for your patience guys! I have a lot more coming up and can’t wait to see your ideas for me tomorrow! I may need to borrow a few!

Oh Destri, your kids are so lucky.
Hey Chica,
First, I am glad this is for girl’s because I still have the subway art shirt on my to-do list. (All 3 of us got sick. GOOOOOD times). If you had another project for boys that was simple enough for me to do I might just flog myself for not getting to it!
2.) I want to squeeze her cheeks. Seriously. She’s so adorable.
Best,
Tina
okay…I meant for girls….not girl’s.
SPELL CHECK ALERT!
no more cold medicine for me!
Oh Destri these jeans and shirt are sooooo cute! I don’t know how you keep coming up with this stuff but it’s great.
That is a great idea! Love the argyle on the pants!
Seriously I wonder how you come up with these things. So cute! Your little Ms. is styling!
So cute! I did something very similar for my son a while back. I love the patterned fabric for the argyle. It’s a nice twist to just being plain.
Thanks Nancy, I didn’t know if that would work out, but I loved how it turned out. I would love to see the ones you made for your son!
I really like this and the argyle touch is adorable.
You should come link this up at Making It With Allie!

Those are adorable…
Visiting via Skip to My Lou. This is an adorable embellishment. (Sadly) both my girls refuse to wear jeans, but maybe this will peak their interest!
And I have another question before my first one is even approved!
Could you do this with a stretch or knit fabric (open legged sweat or velour fabric)???
thank you!
