I have a couple easy tutorials for you today to dress up any bed quickly and on a budget. One is just about as simple as it gets, adding a little personality to plain sheets, and the other is a re-purposing project for an easy pillow cover. Seriously, so easy. Like 30 minutes or less for both combined, kind of easy. Let’s get started!
Diy Ric Rac Sheets
- all your sewing stuff
- 2 yards of ric rac
- flat twin sheet
- matching thread
Now just sew right down the center with a little longer stitch length, leaving about an 1/2 inch extra ric rac at the start. I decided to sew the ric rac on just below the detail on the cuff, that way when I fold it over on the bed, viola’, instant cuteness!
For the ends I just wrapped them around the back and did a little zigzag to secure.
There you have it!
Not into ric rac? Need a few ideas for the boys? Here are a few more ways you can dress up a plain sheet:
- add a running stitch along the cuff edge with embroidery floss. I think this would be fun with a boys room, and make it look like a road :) Perfect for those of you without a sewing machine
- add a ruffle along the cuff edge by cutting a 130 inch long (you will probably have to sew strips together) by 2 inch using pinking shears, sew a basting stitch along the length, gather, then sew on
- Buy lace trim that has a gathered finish and sew it on the cuff
- Applique your child’s name onto the cuff so that when you turn it over it is reads upright
Any other ideas?
Easy Pillow Cover
I found a ribbed knit shirt at the goodwill and it was the perfect color to go along with Eleni’s bedding, and so so soft. I just took a pillow insert and fitted it into the shirt and it fit perfect.
So I cut off the sides and top, sewed around three sides, leaving the bottom open…(there’s a peek at the comforter, think I will leave that for Friday :))
Then just folded the end over like so. All done! Just make sure you have about five inches extra length on the end and it stays folded under nicely. Then you can remove it and wash whenever you need. So easy you guys! It was one of those ten minute projects that are so satisfying. I have a feeling it will be her favorite pillow because it is so soft. Her daddy is already trying to stake claim on it.
So get to scouring the shirts at your local thrift store, I think a button down would be adorable!
If you make either of these, or even your own version of dressing up sheets send me a pic or add it to our flickr pool so I can share on an upcoming post!
Here is the pile of fabric I was swimming in today, looking for options to use in her reading nook, can’t wait!
And I found this at a flea market that will be perfect. I might have to keep this one for myself when she is done with it :)
Okay, so that is it for today, tomorrow I will have the how-to for a super easy pieced pillow and a bigger one for the bed.
See you then!
