Edible Insects

by aubrey on July 28, 2010

Yesterday a friend invited us over for crafts.  We had a great time and I’m excited to share with you what we did, BUT it will have to wait until next week because it goes along with Green Wednesday.  I’ll give you a heads up, save some some baby food jars to be ready for next week.

While you anxiously wait for next week, try out these cute little yummy snacks with your kiddos.

Supplies to make ants on a log:

  • celery
  • peanut butter
  • raisins

Supplies to make a butterfly:

  • celery
  • cream cheese
  • pretzel sticks and pretzel twists

Supplies to make a spider:

  • crackers
  • peanut butter
  • raisins
  • pretzel sticks

Isn’t that a cute plate?  My friend made it when she was in 1st grade!  Apparently you can buy a plate making kit, I’ll have to figure that one out…the possibilities…

You can make your own plates! My daughter’s school did Make-A-Plate for a fundraiser. I also posted about where to buy the kit on my gift blog:

Those butterflies are sooo cute and creative. That would be such a fun hands on snack for our preschool this year. Thanks for the cute ideas.

My boys like “ants stuck in the mud,” a grahm cracker smothered with peanut butter and a few raisins on it for ants.

I love fun food! Very cute Aubrey. And I like the “ants in the mud” idea. I would have never thought to give food names! So much fun! Around here at our boring place we just call it crackers with peanut butter on them… :)

This is such a good way to get the kids to eat their fruits & veggies by letting them craft their own lunch. They’ll be so into making bugs, they won’t even realize what they are eating!
